  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Over the course of the day I help keep the production line running. It is of up most importance to do this as down time on machines is very costly to the company. There is also other aspects of the business I interact with that helps me understand their role and how they can help me and others on my line.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • With my mentor I am learning loads about the way the computers work (the ones that control and let you control the machine). And I am learning about all the systems behind the machines so I can better understand them when i meet them when they break down. I also learn about the different roles inthe company and how they all come together to work as a group.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The college is not as good as working at plant, however it does provide a vital foundation for many of the health and safety common sense that you will need to konw to be in the work place. The first year was enjoyable in the way it taught all the engineering skills well with hard working staff in the engineering department. The work at plant can get abit slow at times but when there is activities to do it becomes very interesting.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The orgainsation of the college is acceptable but my experience of the first year that it was lacking in some areas but that was over come as they year went on. The organisation at work is really down to you, as you have to put in meetings for meeting new people as you go from one area to the next. They are orgainsed enough to put in meetings so you can discuss work to do with BMET like NVQ or college.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If you are in need then they will provide very good support to your needs. If something happens to you that may affect your work as an appentice they treat you well and are very flexible to get you back on tract with college and work related issues that may occur.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • If you ask they will do just enough to help you along. Some teachers like many other places are better at providing this so its a mixed bag when it comes to support towards your college work. They are all commited to make sure you get assigments in and most teachers provide good content to help you get these assignments done on time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am in my second year and im working towards getting the qualifications to progress to my foundation degree, which is where I think the content will get alot more work related and really help me understand things better at work. In the second and first the btec is more to test whether you can handle the stress from work load during the foundation degree.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Its a great opportunity to get your foot in the door of a big company with loads of range for any career wishes. Also there is a car scheme where you dont pay for insurance (for BMWs and MINIs), which is actually a money saver if you consider all the costs you can find with buying a car. The pay is also good and the skills you learn are adpatable to may companies.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • If you have any hobbu regarding engineering use that to your advantage and talk as much as possible about it. Use experiences you may of had before and use them as examples to why you are a good person to employ. This can range from experiences at school/sixform, Duke of Edingburgh and outside of school/sixform activities.
