  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As I am only in my first year, I am in full time college training and I am yet to begin my work placements. Mondays usually consist of learning principles and mathematics of engineering. The rest of the week is usually a practical activity, such as milling, hand-fitting or soldering.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • So far on my apprenticeship, I have learnt a multitude of skills, despite me only being in my first year. I have learnt things on the mechanical side, such as milling or turning, and I have also developed skills in electronics, such as soldering and electronic installation. This provides a good mix of skills over various areas of study.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Although I have studied minimal engineering subjects prior to my apprenticeship, I have found that I enjoy the variety of areas that we study, and I can always find something to do. I feel that I get along with the other apprentices, which helps to create a comfortable and enjoyable environment.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As I am only in my first year, as previously mentioned, I haven't been able to experience the work placements and their structure. However, I have enjoyed the layout of the OAS training centre, although recently I have not been given adequate time to work on my coursework in class.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As I am training on the same site as my employer, it is very easy for me to organise a meeting in order to discuss any issues that I may have. I am also able to email or phone my employer directly with any less urgent problems, that don't require a meeting.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As I am only in my first year, as previously mentioned, I haven't yet received my official role or my first work placement. However, I feel that the training and work that I am doing at OAS will be beneficial to me when I am working in a professional environment.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Although I have seen a few extra curricular activities advertised, I am yet to take part in one. On the other hand, there is a club that you can join for just 3 pounds, and there are table tennis tables, a piano and some gym equipment that you can use at lunch.

  • 9a. Would you recommend United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • So far on my apprenticeship, I have been able to see that there are many diverse opportunities and experiences through UKAEA, and they can provide experiences in all areas of engineering, as well as non engineering. I would recommend this apprenticeship to someone who isn't fully sure on what area of engineering they would like to study yet, and wants to explore the possibilities.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority?
  • When applying to UKAEA, you should realise that there are much more opportunities than just electrical or mechanical engineering, and there are even areas of the company that aren't engineering based. you should also remember that it is not necessarily about your high grades and qualifications, but is about work ethic and willingness to learn.
