  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • i am in the training school to learn the skills that i will need in the factory, thes include hand fitting, milling, turning, electrical, electronics, mechanical and plc programming, i am also doing a btec level three course for one day each week that compliments this learning and will contribute to my final qualification.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills as well as developing some of my exixting skills, i have had the chance to build and test some electrical circuits as well as some fluid power circuits and i have learnt to weld and use a milling machine and have been able to learn to use a lathe.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am enjoying the program very much, i am enjoying engaging with the younger apprentices and sharing ideas and knowledge, I am learning new things on a daily basis and i am gaining in confidence all of the time, taking part in a range of different activities is very satisfying.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the programme is very well structured and the organisation is very good, we have been put in three groups of twelve people for the workshop activities and we rotate through different sections every four weeks, this helps us to not get too comfortable and prevents boredom and complacency as there is always something new to learn.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is always plenty of support available from my employer should it be required, there are extra voluntary classes that can be attended if we are having trouble with any of the btec work and the instructors in the workshop are more than happy to give extra help to any individuals who may require it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • the training provider provides good support for us when we are working towards our qualification. If any of us apprentices are having any difficulty either at work or at home, there is always someone to talk to and they will try to put measures in place to help deal with any challenges that may arrise.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As i do not have a role at the moment apart from being a mature apprentice, I am unable to give a definitive answer to this question, however i believe that the academic work i am doing for the btec as well as the practical work done in the workshop will give me all of the required skills for my future role as an engineer.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there is a subsidised gym on site at bmw plant oxford which is ope for 19 hours each day and costs £15 per month, it offers a wide range of classes that can be booked for the inclusive price as well as a comprehensive selection of resistance training machines as well as free weights.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • BMW group is a world leader in it's field and has aspirations to make all of it's apprentices fulfil their potential, the apprenticeship is well structured and there is plenty of support and encouragement available, the demographic of the apprentices is diverse and includes people from different backgrounds.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • Make sure that you have researched the company and fully understand what will be expected from you as a BMW apprentice, first impressions matter so if the interviewer thinks that you have done some good research then they will know that you are serious about wanting to work for the company.
