  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I run my own Funeralcare branch in a busy shopping centre in witham. I am in charge of the day to day running of the branch. Opening closing/ banking/security. I take all details for new & existing funerals and make all of the arrangements. I take care of the deceased person and make arrangements for them to come into our care. I then follow it through to the end point of burial or cremation

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes many . I have learnt many skills in respect of the job itself. The legal requirements for burial's and cremations to take place, the order in which things need to be done, the roles of each team member within the funeral family . I have also learnt about funerals as a whole. The layout/ music/special requests . I've learnt loads about the different types of funerals we can offer . I've also learnt about different religions and how best to deal with and respond to different families . Learnt loads about memorials and masonry too

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Very much so . Lots that I wouldn't otherwise have learnt . Goes into areas that beforehand I knew little about . Helps you have solid knowledge of other areas too. When things have been unclear...I've now got the validation and correct ways of doing things . Its all done clearly in a set format which seems helpful so far

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I am quite new to the course so only time will tell. From what I can gather from the literature I have been given so far and also from my induction day it seems great. Set out well with different tasks to work towards. It seems to have a 'one thing at a time' way of working which is clear and easy .

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Luckily my branch is quiet so I get time to research and complete my tasks. I have also been told that I can book time out of my diary to ensure I am up to date with tasks and modules , its a work in progress at the mo. So far so good .

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • At the moment I have had support every time I have emailed and called . It has been quick and efficient and I have no complaints . I've only just started this though. I do know exactly who to speak to should I need assistance further . Having your own coach is a great idea .

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • From what I can gather the course is extremely relevant and will teach me lots about my role . This will help me when dealing with my families . There are some questions that I'm asked that I often have to phone up a colleague to answer... this wont continue for much longer as it looks as though the course will be giving me the further training I need.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • No there doesn't seem to be which in my opinion is a real shame. The job involves a lot of lone working and we rarely have networking events or even meetings . As for socialising there is absolutely nothing ! This is a shame and would help the whole team to bond and work together better in my opinion. We don't even have a Xmas do!

  • 9a. Would you recommend Co-op to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The perks of the job are good, fairly decent pay, scope to extend learning, hope for promotion in the future . The sick pay, holiday and pension benefits are also better than some companies. The only thing I would say is that you need to be a responsible individual as lots of jobs are left for you to do alone which sometimes can be daunting! Especially whilst still in training !


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • Ask as many questions about the job role at the interview stages. Lots of it are not told to you until you start and this is not a job that everyone can do ! You will be required to work alone a lot and make lots of decisions with minimal help. Take your time with the online assessments and also prepare and do your research before attending the interview. The job takes a very responsible person so you will have to impress and show you have very good people skills.
