  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Funeral Arranger and my day to day role is to support other Funeralcare staff, particularly Funeral Directors, arrange and carry out funerals, and support families with their needs at a crucial time. It is important to get it right and help the grieving family give their loved ones the best send off.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, quite a lot. I didn't know anything about Funeralcare prior to this role. I have learnt how important it is to listen to people, find out what they want/need and to provide that for them to the best of my ability. I have learnt a lot about things connected to the role, such as what happens behind the scenes arranging funerals, the Coroner's role, how the Crematorium works and about masonry.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is very in depth, again as above, it makes you look into the finer details as to what exactly is involved in providing such a service. It makes you delve into how things work and why it is so important. I also get on well with my Coach. She is a great support.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Generally, the structure is very well laid out. There are aspects which are difficult to get passed as certain observations are difficult to plan. Such as a funeral arrangement, or helping someone take out a plan. Sometimes these are just done on the spot and it is not possible for the Coach to be present in order to sign it off as observed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive all the support I need. I am given adequate time to attend reviews, look into certain aspects of Funeralcare for training, meet up with my Coach and do any work necessary towards completing my NVQ. I very much appreciate the time and effort put in by my Coach, not to mention her patience.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My Coach, is very supportive. She is always helping me through the tasks and helps me to understand what I am doing and why I am doing it. She has a lot of time and patience, even when sometimes you cannot complete certain elements due to it being during a normal working day.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel it helps me perform much better. Whilst I already familiar with standards of behaviour within a workplace, funeralcare is entirely different to anything I have done before and the depth of knowledge required for this role is so very important. My coach helps me to understand these depths and is wonderful at what she does.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am very much involved in a lot of community work. This is very important to the role as it builds friendships and relationships locally. We also work together well as a team inside the workplace and out. I have on a few occasions met up with colleagues in a social capacity.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Co-op to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Coop is an excellent company to work for. They are continually striving to make things better and regularly ask staff for feedback about what is going well, what is not going well and what improvements can be made. I do feel these are, at times, acted on and I don't think they will ever stop doing so.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • Go for it! I would advise anyone that Funeralcare is well worth the effort. It is quite a lengthy process during the initial application, various tests and interviews, but it is very important to get the right people for the job. But once you're in, you feel part of a family.
