  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I meet with bereaved families to arrange funerals and over see the finer details to make their loved ones funeral as special and unique as they were. I am usually the first face/voice the client sees/hears when they first contact the funeral home. I also can complete funeral plans for clients wanting to plan for their future.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I had zero experience of funerals or bereavement before starting this role. This whole position was completely new to me, every single thing I do is a new skill learned. I had customer service experience but even that doesn’t really relate to this role because with what I do every day is such a personal and somewhat private nature.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I no longer think of my job as a job, it’s part of my life now. I certainly couldn’t do this if I didn’t love it, so to answer the question I love my job and am really enjoying the program as I am learning so much more about what I do, why I do it and how to do it

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I enjoy the freedom I have, I know that [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] is at the end of the phone or email of I need her. I have had 1 meeting with her so far and I found that I fully understand what I need to do, when I need to do it by. I thoroughly enjoy structure and that is definitely what my program is. I am thoroughly organised which helps me to be where I need to be.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I haven’t yet had any contact from my line manager about my course to date. But I know what [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] is fully supporting me and as previously mentioned she has reassured me that she is ready and willing to help me whenever I need her. I have had help from my funeral director at a local level and that was appreciated. I phoned my line manager to ask a question about one of my modules but she didn’t answer nor did she phone back, luckily my FD has been on hand to help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I think I have made it abundantly clear that [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] has been absolutely wonderful so far. She has been on hand both on the telephone and via email to clarify any issues that i’ve had. I feel like i’m very fortunate to have someone so helpful supporting me

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Just through reading my first few modules, I feel like I have learned so much more about my role. For example I have been forced to find out more about the coroner, I thought I knew what they did but it turns out that I really didn’t. The reading materials are good but I like that you are encouraged to go off and research items independently

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not as far as I am aware however that would be really nice. Occasionally our local team will meet up at the local pub on a Friday to get together away from the pressures of our day to day jobs. We use this opportunity to be ourselves and not bring work with us

  • 9a. Would you recommend Co-op to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I believe in our products and services whole heartedly. I genuinely feel that no other funeral businesses offer the same level of service as us. I like how ethical the co-op are with regards to trying to help families to keep costs of funerals within their budget. Funeral poverty is real and I am very aware of this with everything I do.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • Be yourself always! It’s one of our core values. Don’t pretend to be anything you’re not in the application/interview stages. I would suggest researching the job that you’re applying for, I went into my role feeling like alot of taboo had been broken down due to spending time researching what it is that i’d Be doing
