  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves accepting and checking deliveries, managing on-site cash and stock, preparing the business for opening or closing down the pub for the night as well as being responsible for maintaining the cask ales and performing line cleaning. Additionally I also do the weekly Liquor stock count and enter this into the system for analysis on a week 1 and 3.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time at Greene King I have learnt a range of new skills and am constantly building on this through the Lifetime Apprenticeship and a range of workshops and courses run by Greene King. I have been building skills in the background tasks that go with running a pub as well as building on customer skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The L3 Programme I am doing through Lifetime tends to more focus on the business and customer facing skills that are appropriate to my job role and they have been useful to build on my skill set especially around how to recognize the different customer profiles and their wants / needs and how this can be used along with understanding competitors to improve the business.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is well structures with organised 1 to 1 meetings either in person or remotely with the regional trainer who covers a range of topics either through discussion, online tests, observations or by using workbooks. There is also a huge amount of material available to aid this through the online system.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am given a large amount of support from my employer as my GM is keen on helping us to progress not just on the course but building a career in the industry. We are taught how to do a range of different tasks and sent away on several courses and workshops. The one area where support lacks is lack of time given for self study

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider gives a range of support for working towards the qualification primarily through the regional trainer and the 1 to 1 visits each month. the online system also provides many fact sheets workbooks and short bite size quizzes to check your knowledge. There is also a open forum available to use.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Working towards the qualification through Lifetime is helping to perform better in the job role as you are constantly developing new skills which can then be put in to practice on the job giving a bigger skill set and increasing the range of tasks that can be performed and improving how things are done.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • to my knowledge there is no extra-curricular activities that are available in the work place however there are a couple of very active closed facebook groups which are available to share things with other members of the company and which can be a great source of information or support when needed.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is a great place to work and there is a huge emphasis on developing your career and a lot of time effort and money is put into providing all the training that is needed and there is always more that you can choose to do yourself. The staff benefits including staff and friends and family discounts are a huge incentive as well as the online discount scheme.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
  • Greene King are a great company to work for in my experience. They make sure that you have all the basics you need to know before starting and they drip feed further training throughout the first 12 weeks so as to not overwhelm you with everything all at once. you are looked after and guided throughout and always given further opportunity to 'bluebottle your potential' and encouraged to further your skills and build a career.
