Trainee Quantity Surveyor Review

I am a Quantity Surveyor, on a day to day basis I get packages together for different types of construction work and I go out to get quotes off multiple companies. Then I have to review the quotes and compare them to our budget to get the best company to use. The I will set them up on the relevant contract for the project.

Since I have started my confidence has increase along with my communication skills because I need to go out to different companies for quotes so this has allowed me to develop the skills quite fast. My written English is getting better, especially when I am writing emails I need to talk in a certain manner so I can get my point across clearly so this has helped me learn.

I am really enjoying my programme at the minute. I get to interact with a lot of people face to face and on the phone and talk to a lot of people that have a lot of experience in the industry that can help. Also, people are putting confidence and trust in me to get certain jobs done right which makes me feel positive about my work so far and I do get a lot of support when I do complete new jobs.

With university the programme is very structured, I know week by week what topics I am going to be learning and involved with. In terms of the company I am at my manager just gives me jobs day to day depending on what is happening so I do not always know what might be going on day to day in the office, however when I get onto a site I have been told there will be tasks that I will have to repeat weekly and monthly.

I receive a lot of support from my employer. When I am in the office there are always a line of people ready to answer any questions I have as some may not have the answer. Also, when I am completing jobs that I haven't done before my manager knows I may have problems and he is always there to ask questions and give me more support so that I can get the job done right.

I do get support from the university through the webinars you can ask questions and sometimes the forums. They also say they are always there to drop an email to as well. In my first semester it was harder because when my colleague got in touch there was no reply but it seems different now as I have new teachers in this semester.

When I am learning week by week it is easy for me to go into work and apply it. I have done measurement in my job role and university so it was helpful to solidify my knowledge on the topic. Also, I can talk to people in work to make sure I know exactly what everything means so I understand it more and I can apply it to jobs that I am completing in work such as contractual procedures.

When I was on site in Blackpool there was a 5 a-side football that you could go to but I don't live close so it wasn't the best and now in the office there doesn't seem to be any sports teams. I have been to a ball with work but that was a company one so there isn't too many activities to complete at work.

They check all work and give feedback so I can learn from my mistakes and grow quicker. Also, they have confidence in you as a worker which has a big effect on my confidence because it makes me feel better about the work I complete because I know I am trusted to get the job done.

Ask a lot of questions when in work so that you can learn faster, there is no thing as a stupid question because when you start no-one expects you to be an expert in the industry so its helpful. Also, don't be afraid to make mistakes as everything is checked and a lot of feedback is given so you can learn and grow as your career develops.
