  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My daily role consists of pricing building works throughout the Wakefield area for the council and schools. This can range from a door lock to walls to playgrounds. This role is mostly desk based with the majority of the jobs we receive not requiring a site visit although sometimes we do have attend sites to take measurements etc if the job is either quite large or whether we need further information.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Prior to this I've had minimal building work experience however each day I seem to learn something new thanks to College and the help of my team at work. Speaking to clients is something I'm quite used to with previous work experience however I do think that this job has helped be develop further with talking to people.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I definitely enjoy the people I work with. While the job isn't the most active I've had, I find the balance of computer work and site visits quite good. In terms of the college it's quite a long day and travelling to Leeds isn't the easiest however as it's only one day a week it's manageable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Everything seems fine with the programme. From the start date everything was made clear on the structure and when I'd be going to college and when I'd be working. For any reason if the college is closed there's a lot of support to still attend to complete work or get on with college work if required during Tuesdays at work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my team, manager and our social value officer is always in touch when necessary for updates on college and making sure we're getting the support required. My manager and the team are very supportive through out the work days and offer me as much help possible when needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I believe the college offers as much support as they possibly can. They're always quite helpful and let you get on with work when you need to. They teach as much as they can in the time frame we have at college but still offer support in and out of college when required.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I'm learning a lot of different things at college which not all necessarily relate specifically to my job role, however what I have picked up at college does help my further understanding of what's required in many aspects of the building trade which I find valuable now and for future careers.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There always seems to be something happening each month that we can take part in and a lot of charity work is carried out for us to involved in which we can take part in when such events arise. As well as exercise promotion, for example in May teams compete in how many steps they can complete which adds some friendly competition in the office and promotes some exercise.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Equans to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The people who you work with are fantastic and I think the knowledge you can gain from college and the people around you will set you up for anything you want to moves towards later in life. Especially in terms of the apprenticeship it's a great opportunity to get a great qualification.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Equans?
  • To be yourself and to give it 100%. There are a lot of opportunities to gain a lot of knowledge from the people you work with and the qualifications you can receive. I definitely believe you'll get out what you put in. The people and the qualifications could really set you up for life if you give it your all.
