  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a Day to Day basis we get to experiance a variety of different job roles. In engineering we can work as a plant engineer which means we are responsible for the general maintanence of the plant. In this role we have seen that there has been a push in the preventitive maintenance meaning we are now looking at how we can perfrom non intrusive work to improve components of the plants life. It is reat to be involved with the changes on a site which has been based here for over 100 years.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • For a start i have massivley developed my mechanical knowledge and unstanding around the equipment we use. Although its imilar to things which we may use in everyday life, equipment such as mechnical seals is what set them apart allowing their maintenance to be very interesting. the development of soft skills like working with others has been a great advantage as i have been coached by the people around me to best practices.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I vastly enjoy my program, This is due to the nature of the site and the oppertunities which are providied by the program. The nature of the site is that we neveer know if ther eis a break down or preventitive maintanence, this is due to the age of equipment. This means I can come to work in the morning and never know what i will be doing till im theer. This prevents repetion. The oppertunities providied by the scheme vary as there are chances o go away and help coach the new apprentices upon their new arrival, get involved with site initiatives like the community science labs, and much more.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Our program is very well structured. In the first 3 weeks wee go through a thorough induction which allows us to be breified aswell as introducing us to the world of work. In this brief they explain how the course follows. For example: - 3 month placement at college while starting BTEC L3 YR1 - move back to site and 6 month placement on plant Then we complete 6 month placements allowing us to get to grips with different areas of the site.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is plenty of support from our employer, we are provided with an apprentice work room which is bigger than many meeting rooms. Equipment and informaiton for college is providied to us. Ontop of this there is a very good level fo communication between the apprentices and manager, 1 to 1 revies every 6 weeks, Group HSE meetings every month, this allows us to maintain a good level of progress with a good way to feedback to our managers.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A reasonable amount, they teach us what they are required to teach us, but this is because alot of learning is now expected to be completed by yourself. They do provide good facilities in libarys and computer rooms to allow us to learn this. They also provide good timely feedback.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Although certain topics aren't directly relevant to the job i do, it provides me a good base understanding of how other things are made. This base understanding allows me to figure out solutions to problems which may arrise due to manufacturing issues, this is due to understanding the more modern manufacturing techniques.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Syngenta to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I believe it is an excellent place to work with a very good set of people working around you. The site ethos is that of ensuring the site is still here in 50 years meaning everyone is working to ensure the security and stability of the site through the process of developoing this skills which are already in place and training up a new generation.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Syngenta?
  • Be honest and talk about yourself, explain your interests, come on the taster day and try to consider how what we do on a day to day basis and how you may of done things similar in the past. You arent required to strip down and rebuild a gearbaox within first 5 days, the apprenticeship is about learning, show that you want to learn.
