  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a Relationship Manager Apprentice entails supporting a Relationship Manager (my line manager) within his role in the Housing Finance team providing new and existing loan facilities to a portfolio of Housing Associations . I often help produce documentation such as Shared Relationship Plans, RAROEs , MGS Grading Models and Term Sheets to support my manager in addition to attending Client meetings and producing Call/Meeting Notes off the back of these meetings. In addition to this, I also support the wider Housing Finance team as required.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • i have learnt how to produce documentation such as Shared Relationship Plans, RAROEs , MGS Grading Models and Term Sheets. i have become more comfortable attending Client meetings and producing Call/Meeting Notes off the back of these meetings. i have learnt to look at the wider client portfolio as a whole and analyse their position.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • i do enjoy my programme alot, and i feel as though i have met some amazing people who will help me excel my career in the future. it has been nice to feel challenged in the tasks that i am doing day to day. however i have not enjoyed the learning side of this apprenticeship as i feel as though it was not well planned/ thought out. it has been very confusing with all the changes and i feel as though BPP have been very unprofessional

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel that because the programme is new and we are the first level 6 apprentices to join the bank , it has been very trial and error (more error to be honest). there has been alot of confusion regarding most aspects of the apprenticeship, and quite unprofessional in comparison to most apprenticeships that i have heard of from people i know also going through the apprentice scheme

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • RBS have been alot of help in trying to fix the problems we have faced during the apprenticeship, they have resolved certain issues but i feel as though they could be more stern with BPP due to the amount of disruption that has been caused throughout the duration of the programme. i feel as though it was falsely advertised as a level 6 (degree equivalent) apprentice as i will not roll off the programme with any achievement that is equivalent to a degree.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • i think that the staff at BPP are not very helpful. we watch weekly webinars to help prepare us for our assignment and until the 6th webinar (thats 12 hours into learning) our tutor hadnt even read/ been briefed on what our assignment was actually on. therefore hadn't focused on areas that would benefit us. we have complained (all 5 apprentices on my intake) to our skills development coach and nothing has really improved.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • it doesn't have any connection to what i am doing in my day to day role , at all ! i have only done the first unit so i cannot speak for the whole learning that will be involved throughout the course but so far i haven't gained any knowledge that will benefit me in my current role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • i feel as though this is a grey area at RBS. There is alot of social events that go on but not everyone is necessarily invited/ knows about it . i feel as though the apprentices do not get as much exposure to the sports teams/ social networking events as the graduates do and i think it is unfair.

  • 9a. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • i think that at the moment i am unhappy in my apprenticeship but overall RBS is a good company to work for however i wouldn't recommend BPP Apperentices to anyone. i think that it will lead to great things and once i have completed the programme my career will be able to flourish as part of this organisation. there is alot of doors that could open once i get through the rough patches

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • don't take the advertisement word for word and ask as many questiona as possible. be prepared for the unexpected and if your not happy , speak up !!! I cannot stress enough how important it is to ask questions if your unsure about any thing as this is the only way it will be resoved.
