  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In the first year, we undertake a role at Warwickshire trident college, part of the Warwickshire College Group, where we are taught further education, as well as practical skills such as fitting, welding, turning and milling. From the second year onward, I am based in plant in Coventry where I undertake testing of the cars to check and create calibrations in regard to the after-treatment.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During the first year I have learnt many practical skills such as fitting, welding, turning and milling. I have also learnt a lot about the different parts of an engine and how to strip one down, within our engine build unit. In addition, I've been learning to test the cars to check and create calibrations in regard to the after-treatment.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed learning practical skills at college such as fitting, welding, turning and milling. When in plant I have also been enjoying testing the cars to check and create calibrations in regard to the after-treatment. Within my team there are 20 of us with a diverse culture, enabling you to work well with everyone.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • In the first week, we had an induction into the company at the Ricoh arena which was very well organised and had a whole schedule on an app. This induction included talks from outsiders, as well as meeting my line manager and seeing the roles which I could apply for

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Within my department I have a manager, who handles the overall role of my job, and then a mentor who I shadowed at the beginning. My job training mainly came from my mentor whilst at plant, and then a variety of lecturers and staff for the practical work at college.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My job training mainly came from a variety of lecturers and staff for the practical work at college. At college I had a work based learning manager which acted as a personal tutor, meaning they carried out 1:1 reviews with us on a regular basis, and could be contacted at any time for help or assistance

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • What i'm learning on your apprenticeship helps me on a day-to-day basis in my role for a some of the processes like 8D decision making, I have learnt at college. However, within the first year, it was a very general course and so there was not much training towards my job role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Within plant there are several activities such as 6 a side football teams, gyms and other sports. However, at college there are no extra-curricular activities provided and so I had to create a 6 a side football team with a group of apprentices which we play every Monday night in Warwick.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a good company with great values, and is improving society with its innovative engineering of cars, both fuel powered and battery powered. Within the company there is a good team working environment, and they make you feel that the role you are undertaking is valuable to the company success.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • The application process involves a form being filled out, followed by two tests, the first being a simple situation judgement test where you watch scenarios and choose the best outcome. The second test is more difficult and requires working under pressure of time to answer many questions on error checking, mechanical principles and other aptitude testing questions.
