Work Experience Student Worked with trainees who gave tasks such as proof reading, organising information into tables, filling out forms and doing company searches, which involved searching for and printing out documents from a data base. I also had some tasks designed to help teach me a bit about commercial law, for example using PLC (online legal dictionary) to look up terms. On Monday we had presentations for most of the day and did a business exercise, then for the rest of the week we had a presentation in the morning on a branch of commercial law, then worked with trainees in the afternoon. Each day was with a different department.
I've become more confident at talking to and working with new people, both the the other work experience students and the people working at the firm. I also gained skills in proof reading and learnt how to use legal websites such as Companies Search and PLC, as well as administrative skills such as more advanced word processing, photocopying and how to record the postage of a large number of letters.
I really enjoyed working with 7 other people of my age and experience. I think this is one of the unique things about the programme. Although you work with trainees you are also part of a group of other students, which makes you less nervous. I also really enjoyed getting to know the other 6 people and we had some fun lunch hours! I enjoyed how the company were friendly and laid back yet efficient. It definitely met my expectations as I gained an insight into commercial law.
All the trainees and everyone we met were really friendly and welcoming. They all valued us as potential future employees and were all really interested in our school/career plans. Everyone expressed appreciation at the work we did.
Very well organised in that everything ran on time and we were we given detailed plans for each day. We were always assigned someone to help us and were emailed updates frequently.
Lots - they were always willing to answer questions and gave us a great induction at the beginning of the week. We were able to email for help whenever.
(our trainees). They were also always willing to answer questions and give us advice on careers and university.
The placement is unpaid as it's work experience for year 12.
As it's just a week, we did nothing outside of work. At lunch we were able to socialise and one lunchtime all the work experience students went out for a meal.
Yes
It's a really challenging and rewarding week at a brilliant firm where everyone is really friendly and approachable.
Fill in the form early and spend a lot of time on it. Some of the form is quite hard as we haven't done law yet, but answer the questions the best you can. Don't worry about the week - you will meet some great people!
