  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a Design Engineer involves CAD models and analysis, part reviews, problem solving, root cause meetings, supplier events and part/vehicle testing. There are so many different aspects to the job role, not including placements. Day-to-day I may also complete some University work in order to keep on top of my studies.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme as it has so many aspects that benefit me. I gain experience from working in a global company that employs thousands of people, get workplace and specific job role experience. A good salary has also allowed me to enjoy things outside of work that I otherwise would not be able to.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured as a whole. You complete what is outlined to you from the start at application throughout the programme. Depending on your department they will also employ a structure on how to get you through it, timing placements and projects so that they align with your qualifications, making the balance a lot easier.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • At University you will have a tutor that will support you throughout the degree and keep in touch. This will be one of the lecturers so that they can also help with any help required for the course. They hold regular meetings with the apprentice team so that any issues raised can be discussed and sorted, from work-university balance, to specific projects or units.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The degree is titled Applied Engineering, and is not relevant to the automotive sector, although heavily steered towards. I like this as it does apply and help at work, without being too niche that you don't get an overall coverage. Engineering links to so many things that the units you complete such as Materials, Maths, Mechanics etc can be applied to wherever you work in the company.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The company has many groups and teams for different sports that train outside of work that you can get involved in. As well as Christmas Do's and regular activities organised by your team e.g. paint balling, meals out etc. There are often networking events at different sites, and community meets/coffee mornings.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think it is a good place to work and has kick started my career in the right direction. I've met so many people and learnt so much. It offers good progression, pay and benefits such as a good pension and employee discounts. They have a heavy focus on people and their well being.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • Do your research - there is plenty of advice and guidance online. Be yourself - be kind and approachable, and don't be scared to show personality. Get as much experience as you can, there are a few schemes that allow you to get experience at JLR before you apply, this will show you are interested and committed. Don't be worried if you feel you don't have any experience - this is an entry level programme so there are no previous work experience expectations.
