  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in a machine shop fixing large CNC machines when they break down. I help Maintain a total of twenty three CNC lathes and mills. each machine requires weekly maintenance to prevent them breaking down this is carried out by various members of the maintenance team. Machines can break down various ways so it's always interesting to find out what the problem is.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • While on the apprenticeship I have been studying to gain qualifications such as: Level 3 BTEC engineering (finished) Level 4 HNC engineering (currently studying) NVQ in maintenance (currently studying) As well as the college courses i have also gained qualifications that help me around the work place such as: Mobile Platform Training Electrical Training Pallet loader Training Working at heights

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the variety of work that i get meaning that i'm not doing the same thing all day everyday, which keeps my job interesting. A lot of my colleges are very experienced and are more than happy to help me and give me guidance when I need it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • We have had some issues in the last year as we have changed training providers which has been a bit disruptive; that said every thing is now going smoothly. I have monthly meetings to discuss my apprenticeship and discuss what i need to do in order to complete it. I get an appraisal from my manager every six months where I can discuss any problems i have and ask for any additional training i need.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If feel i need to go on a training course, i can ask to go on it and if my manager thinks it is suitable and is relevant to my work I can go on it. I have had support with my college work, allowing me time to do the assignments at work stopping me form falling behind.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The tutors at Uxbridge college are experienced in their and most have worked in the engineering industry before becoming a tutor giving them a lot of experience and knowledge. Uxbridge college push me to get the highest grade possible and have plenty of resources to help me. where problems have arisen with the college, they have been dealt with quickly by the course leader.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Studying a HNC gives me a better understanding of the engineering industry and how it is managed. through my design module i have a better understanding of the choices a company makes and the sustainability of different products. The maths and mechanics modules teach me different ways to solve problems that i am working on.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • A few times a year we will have an apprentice curry night, we have one when the new apprentices start so they can get to know all the apprentices. we have been to the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford to represent the company and also airshows at RAF Duxford. There is a football club after work once a week on the fields just down the road from the factory.

  • Yes

  • Working for Martin-Baker is rewarding as what we make is quite unique and we save lives around the globe. The company has a lot of history and is very proud of it and this shows in the way they continue to encourage workers to push themselves to get the most out of their career.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Martin-Baker?
  • Having engineering hobbies or skills that you enjoy and can talk about will help a lot in the application process. Being able to present a way to solve problems in a team, utilizing advice from other team members. Learn some history of the company to get an appreciation for what we do so you can show us why you want to be a part of it.
