  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I assist in stripping and building armoured vehicles in Special Vehicle Operations. It involves removing trim and mechanical components from a standard range rover and sending the bare vehicle over to be armoured with steel plates. Once it comes back we build it back up and modify any bits that need it ready to be sold.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt new fitting skills involving filing, drilling and a bunch of other stuff. I have also had to do some problem solving because a lot of the jobs we do don't have a specific format so you need to think about them. I have developed my skills of working in a team.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme in terms of where I am currently in my workplace, however the apprenticeship side of things has been less than average. We have been left in the lurch a lot of the time and staff at the college come and go so we haven't had a steady path to follow.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme in theory should be well structured as it is all set out to you at the start, however in actual fact it isn't organised at all, as mentioned previously we have been messed around at the college and in our first year we got told we didn't need to do a unit, then that we did have to do it so we completed it and then got told it was a waste of time because we didn't actually have to do it.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We do generally receive support from our employer, it's better now than it was in our first and second years because the manager who has taken over the apprentices is more inclined to assist and give us a structured plan, especially for the new apprentices coming in so they don't feel unsure about anything.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive support from my assessor mainly, he is really good and answering my questions and giving me advice when it comes to work, but the college itself and the JLR office are not very helpful, I don't feel like I can approach them about things because its quite a hostile atmosphere.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like there are a lot of units we did at college that I won't actually use in my workplace, they will come in useful in life in general but a lot of what I do at work is trim related so the mechanical units at college don't slot in very much.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Other than events we organise between ourselves there doesn't seem to be any advertisements for other events, and when they are they are over in the larger workshops such as Gaydon, being a small workshop I don't think it's likely that we'll be involved in anything extra curricular.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They look after you as a company, i.e pensions and pay etc which is a big positive, the people who you work with are all generally really nice and you form a good team. As a company I would highly recommend them but as an apprenticeship scheme I would be inclined to defer them.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • I would tell them to look around first and to make sure it is definitely what they want to do. I would also suggest speaking to people who have done it and getting their opinions and also doing your research into what job role it is that you want. It is also a long time, so if you aren't prepared to dedicate 4 years of your time then maybe go for another option.
