  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day-to-day basis within my role I am responsible for ensuring components and assemblies have been produces to the standards the company requires. this could mean measuring a machined component to make sure it meets the tolerances on the drawing, pressure testing to make sure assemblies works correctly every time or visually inspecting a component to make sure it is free from damage. This role requires a vast knowledge of the final product and also the sub-assemblies that make up the final product, which is build up over the apprenticeship. I am also enrolled with development of departmental procedures and ways we can improve the way we complete jobs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In the last 2 years I have learned a lot about engineering generally but also within my department. before my apprenticeship I knew very little about quality and inspection where as today I have been exposed to many areas of inspection and now play a part in my department offering advice to trainees and other apprentices. my company has put me on various professional courses to develop my understanding and provided environments for me to develop on a more individual basis

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The best part of my programme that I have enjoyed are the external visits. we spent one week in the lake district where I learned a lot about my self through personality tests but also being able to overcome some of my fears. I have also attended air shows and apprentice events where we learn more about our product.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Generally the programme is organised very well through the training department and human resources. there can be frustrations with communication between the company and college. within my department I am supplied with a training plan of departments I will be visiting, this changed a lot however this isn't a bad thing.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The college provide a lot of support especially with the HNC part of your qualification and deal with problems very quickly and efficiently. in term time they will invite you in to study or complete work if they feel this would benefit you, this isn't just something they will do if you are behind.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Even when its hard to see my qualifications help a lot within my day-to-day role. I find the most use I get out of my qualifications is the maths and engineering principle subjects, other subjects I find useful are project and business, these subjects not only help me out in my role but in my personal life with problem solving and budgeting for example.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a few activates to get involved in after work like football and cricket, departments often go out for dinner in the evening or do some sort of activities like bowling. The apprentices have curry nights often and meet outside of work to socialise and we all have similar hobbies.
