  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work within the bought out EDU team, however, I have been placementing in the controls team. My work within the controls team varies, however, recently I have been spending the majority of the time working through the simulink function on matlab to create a simulation which we can use to optimise a strategy that will be used in the cars.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am learning many different processed with in the company which is helping improve my problem solving skills and my communication skills. I have also learnt to use several different types of technology which have helped me to complete my job role. One of the main pieces of software that I feel I am getting very competent with is Simulink.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I adore working in plant, it is fun getting stuck into the work and learning all the new things and interacting with people who have already completed all of their training and are full engineers. There is also a very good social within the team I have been placed in which means it is a very comfortable working environment. However, I hate college. The college is poorly organised and I feel that we are patronized and they do not really understand what we are doing. Hopefully going to the university will be better next year.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is organised and we all have a very good understanding of how the programme will be structured through the 6 years. In my team at least we well understand who to turn to and talk to for help and the processes to find more information. There are also structures in place for how placements should be carried out and what people should be completing before and after placements. However, I am not sure how well these are actually kept to.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support in that I have regular meetings with a work based learning manager and I have a mentor who I can ask for help and is there for me to talk to whenever I need it. There is also plenty of support through out the team and within my department there is an entire area dedicated to the support of the apprentices.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The college is shockingly awful. There are many occasions where we are left to our own devices under the instructions to complete work that will take minimal amount of time, so we end up spending significant periods of time doing absolutely nothing. There are some after college support sessions on certain subjects, however, the college is not understanding when it comes to people who will be incapable of attending these sessions. Therefore, when people are struggling there is not anywhere they can go to get the help that they need. The practical side of the college however tends to be much better than the higher education side.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • At the moment I feel that there is very little relevance between my role and what I am learning at the college. The automotive subject should have been good and given me a better understanding of the cars at a higher level but this has been so badly taught that I have almost as little understanding as I did at the start and most of what I do know was learnt at the work place.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I go climbing with members of my team and department every week. This is a lot of fun and it is allowing for the opportunity to spend time with people that I wouldn't otherwise. There are also meals out and trips to do things such as hiking in Snowdonia that happen every few weekends which is a lot of fun.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As long as they can get through the first year of college then this course is brilliant. There are multiple opportunities for apprentices and if you throw yourself into the work and make an effort to integrate with your teams then there is usually an active social life that you would be able to participate in which is very good for getting out of the house and trying something new.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
  • Jaguar Land Rover is very team based and needs people who are willing and able to work within teams easily and quickly. You need to show initiative to solve problems as we come up against new issues regularly so you need to be able to at least create an idea of a solution before running to a person who is more experienced to solve it.
