  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day usually consists of being on site and gaining experience on the tools, I feel that this is a great way to start as I'm currently set to be a commissioning engineer because it allows me to see and understand the side that I will later be testing.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt quite a few new skills whilst being in this job, mostly what and how specific tools are used as well as how projects are organised and just how refined this business is. The most interesting I would say is learning exactly how different substations work, if I was to choose I would say that learning about substations is the most interesting part I've experienced so far.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I'm really enjoying the program, mostly thanks to the support that Siemens and other personnel offer. Siemens have given me the opportunity to achieve a HNC Diploma and are allowing me to undertake an NVQ level 4, all essential when in this line of business as it helps shine light on an otherwise overlooked area that is the backbone of modern society and living.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program is very well structured. My three year apprenticeship was laid out in front of me almost immediately. My first year consisted of a smooth run through an advanced HNC program with college and my two remaining years would be taken up by my NVQ, complete with time and experience on site.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a brilliant amount of support from my employer. I feel at ease in a company that reminds you how valuable you are to them and that no matter what your mental or physical state, they will help you to the best of their abilities. This knowledge is one of the things that drive me to exceed what is then asked of me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a great amount of support. If ever I am stuck on a specific or general topic/issue then they are no more than an email and a video call away, this means that my issue is usually sorted by the end of the working day if not sooner.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that it as helped me immensely. You learn a lot more from the course that I originally anticipated. This also means you gain a much broader understanding of just how your job title works and helps in today's world. The qualification my company is putting me through feels valid and well thought out for the business I'm entering.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Across the UK there are extra-curricular activities happening all the time. If the employer isn't providing it then they support it. They let you know that they are behind you every step of the way whilst working for them. My personal favourite activity is within the business, this is volunteering. It gives me a great sens of achievement and helps me to know that my work is supporting me with it.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Siemens to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a fantastic employer with only the best intentions when looking out for their employees. They support every choice you make when trying to better yourself and give you that much needed room to grow and develop in your own way. They look after you and make sure you're given the best of anything they can provide whether it be with your college work or your days working on site.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Siemens?
  • Just be yourself when in the interview, Siemens thrive on their employees being truthful and being themselves. In my experience you could not find a much better company to work for within the industry. If you have hobbies too then you will be encouraged to elaborate during an interview and furthermore encouraged to keep it going by them if you so choose.
