  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job role is to take phones which have been traded into the company and refurbish them to make sure they have all new parts for example a new screen battery speaker and all other parts. These can then be sold as grade A refurbishments. Alot of my job is placing parts on phones.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learn't a few new skills when doing the apprentiship this includes how to diagnose an electrical circuit for example a mainboard on a phone could have a fault and I would be able to diagnose the issue. Another thing is things like time management and how to perform in targeted enviroments.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the people in my work place as everyone is very approachable and I am able to get help when ever this is needed. Another good thing is getting experience to work in a big company and how to maintain a good working attitude and I like the 4 days off

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I like the college side of the apprenticeship more than the working side. This is because we dont really use all of our skills and capability with in the college sessions and transfer that to the workplace, we more or less fit parts on phones and dont learn much more

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support is very good and of we need time in side of work to touch up on things and college then this is usually available to us. If i have any issues at college I can also speak to my employer for support and help which is nice to see.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • With in the college sessions we are always pushed and lots of training is porvided to help us get our qualification. Inside of work we dont really learn the biggest ammount so not much training is provided to really help us improve with in the college sessions, but if we ask from time to time we can go into a different department to get the extra knowledge.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • When it comes to college and work, college has really helped understand and make us better engineers. The work is not the hardest but as well as doing the work we can understand why certain things happen ect due to the the college sessions and use the information in the workplace

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are multiple things you can do additional at work, for example the knowhow FC and from time to time they have events on such as bake a cake and bring it in. The payday raffle comes round also with some questionable prizes as most are not the best but its fun to take part.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Dixons Carphone to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • I dont feel there is enough route for progression with in the company unless you take the manager route which is not the most ideal position for our skill set of electrical engineers. And also to be a manager it takes years of experience and not much benefit by working in the company a long time

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dixons Carphone?
  • I would not consider this a permanent position and if you do want to apply then its probably work getting your qualification and going else where if you want to strive and progress with in the profession you chose. Just have fun and don't make your self feel trapped in the job
