  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Each day can vary but there will be a variety of jobs involved. For example, as an actuarial apprentice you will have the responsibility of valuing member's pensions, collaborating with members of the team to draft and produce formal documents, and working with consultants to help alongside projects for clients.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to act professionally by being a role model for the company. For example, you must write professional emails on a daily basis to a number of third parties and clients. Additionally, you will improve your mathematical skills under an actuarial apprenticeship due to a large number of calculations on a daily basis.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme that I am on because every day is different, and you will receive large amounts of satisfaction when you see a project through and get it complete. Additionally, I get on with everyone in my team and department which makes each day enjoyable in the office.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Overall I would say that my programme has a good structure. From day 1 you get support from the training provider (BPP) and will get a textbook delivered to your office to work through. During your induction when you join, you will undergo a large amount of training on a variety of topics that will be vital in your day-to-day job.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I get a large amount of support from my manager which is really good, because I know that if I ever have any problems then I am able to talk to them. I also had a good experience with the HR team when I joined, and they were helpful through the joining process.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • You get a lot of support from the training provider (BPP). For example, you get a text book, online tutorials, question banks, solution packs which get sent around to you after each tutorial and regular meetings/catchup's with your skills coach. These resources are really useful for keeping me on track.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The first exam you sit is more just an entry exam to progress further into the qualification, so it doesn't relate that closely to day-to-day work that you will complete. However, I believe that the second module is more financial which will be more useful in helping me to perform my job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a large number of social events on a company-wide level, department level or even on a team level. Everyone is really friendly which makes it really easy to get to know people and socialize. I found it very easy to build relationships in the office which has helped with my work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have had a good experience from the beginning. Through large amounts of support from the HR team, training provider and my manager which has made it a very pleasant time for me. I enjoy the work that I do each day, and find that I have drive to get up each morning! If you enjoy maths then it's a very good place to work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aon?
  • Make sure that you are honest on your application and in your interview because it will help when answering questions. Additionally, make sure that you are really passionate about what you are applying for, and do research around 1. the company and 2. the industry, so you know what you're getting into!
