  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves common elements of engineering such as the application of maths and science to engineering, fundamentals of engineering drawing and design, Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and its appropriate application including 2D and 3D modelling. I must understand how to work safely at all times, complying with national and industry health and safety requirements, and work in accordance with company management systems, policies and procedures. I learn how to assess the factors that are important to functional design e.g. the context in which you are working, the materials, components, assemblies, cost, quality, safety, security, risk, environmental impact, ergonomics, aesthetics, the end use and reliability.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting work in office my knowledge and skills specific to electrical engineering have improved massively. I can now read and understand complex engineering drawings. This was something that was very alien to me before my apprenticeship and something that I struggled with. Also, I am now much better at thinking through problems in a logical manner.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my role immensely as I love all aspects of electrical engineering. As well as this, I find anything related to the nuclear industry fascinating, which only adds to my interest/enjoyment. Also, I personally feel that I am very well suited to design and the challenges that it brings.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My apprenticeship programme is structured in a logical manner that makes sense. Everything is planned out ahead of time so that transitions are smooth. I have a good, clear understanding of what I need to do to progress and move forward in my apprenticeship, as do my managers and coordinators.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • It is clear that all apprentices, at any level, receive as much support as they need in whatever area they need. I can go to people with issues comfortably and am always confident that issues are resolved and questions are answered. This support covers all areas, not just work related e.g. mental health etc.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The majority of my tutors at Wigan and Leigh are very good and are excellent at offering further support outside of lessons. If I have any issues with my college work I can go to my tutors at any time with questions and will always have my questions answered quickly.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am working towards a BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I love learning about this topic and I feel that it gives me a solid foundation of understanding that is essential when working. Not everything on the theory side is used in the real world, and conversely, not everything in the real world is covered in the theory. However I would not be able to do my job at the same level without my training because of the understanding that it provides.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Throughout my apprenticeship I am encouraged to participate in STEM events and extra-curricular activities. Every few weeks a CE&I community event is held. This is for members of my discipline only, however it allows us to learn and network with people from outside companies. Social nights out are constantly arranged also, which many be discipline based, apprentice nights out etc.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Sellafield Ltd to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I am very happy with my apprenticeship all round and would certainly recommend it to a friend if they were interested. I am paid generously, given very good training that is also paid for, and I am consistently involved in very interesting, rewarding work in which I am constantly learning new things.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sellafield Ltd?
  • As well as trying to appear as a 'good' applicant (good grades etc.) Do something that sets you apart from everybody else, as everyone applying will have good grades. I did this by putting a lot of effort and time into an electrical engineering project that I showcased during my interview.
