  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice I rotate around the business doing 6 months in different locations around the business. We spend 1 day a week at uni, and 5 hours a week doing professional development and the rest of the time is spent on project. I am also trusted to run a STEM scheme as a part of a team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my presenting skills, as well as working through my degree which pretty much is all new stuff. I have also had the opportunity to achieve an ILM Level 4 qualification in coaching and mentoring, as well as completing the training course entitled creating an impact. This skills are then put to use on a daily basis on site.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy nearly all aspects of my programme, there are elements where I do not enjoy the degree, but that is more of a personal thing rather than anything to do with the business. The level of trust we are given as part of the scheme to run the STEM activities is a real honour.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The scheme has the capability to be well structured and organised, however there are still elements that need to be addressed. We are given roles in each of our 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th years and these tend to change on a yearly basis. If these were kept the same then all would be good. We are given goals to achieve by the end of the year which does help with the structure.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive enough support from our employer on a professional and pastoral level. There are people in place to support and help us when needed for both of these things, and nearly all people on site are willing to help whenever is needed. We are assigned mentors throughout the scheme who are also happy to help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A lot of support is needed as and when we ask for it. Help isn't just given to us on a plate, we need to make the effort to ask for it. A lot of support is needed as and when we ask for it. Help isn't just given to us on a plate, we need to make the effort to ask for it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I sometimes struggle to see the relevance of all modules within the degree, however, all learning is good learning and therefore can and probably will be used in future roles. If there are specific things we need to know, on the job training can be provided to ensure we are able to do it.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes. Social events happen regularly. Football networking happens weekly - this is just a friendly kick about with other engineers on site We have an EDA conference which was a great opportunity to network with others and ask questions to senior engineers which we may not normally get the opportunity to

  • 9a. Would you recommend GE Aerospace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I enjoy the scheme, and if somebody is looking at getting into engineering but doesn't like the look of uni this is definitely for them. I do tend to make it clear that it isn't for everyone because of the speed of the scheme, however, you don't know that until you try.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace?
  • Be open, be honest, show that you have a genuine passion and just be yourself. If you are interested, it will show. get yourself to some career events, and if possible speak to some people on the scheme. Read up on what is to offer, make sure it really is something you want to do and then just go for it.
