  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a infrastructure technical apprentice involves me working on a ticketing system in which displays any hardware or software issues that users of our company has received and I use this ticketing system to control my work and to see what jobs to do next and keep a track of completed and uncompleted jobs. I am on a helpdesk providing help to users raising incident or service requests.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have certainly picked up a lot of new skills through my apprenticeship so far such as how to fix configure certain hardware that I perhaps hadn't worked with before and picking up new skills on different software programs. Also in myself though with picking up new communication skills and having more confidence when talking to a range of different people on a day to day basis. In the short time I have been working as an apprentice here I feel it has already made me progress as a person and not only just as a infrastructure technical apprentice.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I used to hate getting up for a school and studying for subjects I didn't enjoy whereas im not so grumpy in the morning when I wake up to go to work! I enjoy the environment in the office and obviously I enjoy what I do (or otherwise I wouldn't be doing it) and so I don't mind studying for the modules I do at college because I want to make sure I am as successful as I possibly can be in this role. Not to mention the added pay check!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At college I do a range of modules that make up my final qualification. I do them in block release as opposed to day release which I prefer a lot more and they are all spread at well in order to give me enough time to study for the next module. I don't feel like im having to balance work and studying too much as the programme is very well structured to the point where I feel close to zero stress!

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer tries to help me as much as possible. Constantly looking at my ticketing queue to see if there are any jobs he can help me with. I am never afraid to ask any questions as he is always happy to help and makes the working environment a lot more comfortable for me and stress free.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I learn a lot through my college modules which I then come to find might come up in my job role a few days later which is really helpful and also means i don't have to bug anyone with a load of questions! I have come to find my modules have made me a lot more knowledgeable.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Users within our team like to run fun events for example a clay pigeon shooting day! Our company also allow pizza days, Christmas lunches and one of our offices have a football team! This makes sure that all of the users within our company are happy working at the company and i have never come across someone who isn't.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Jisc to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There is not one thing about working here that i haven't enjoyed even from the word Go. Since finding the advertisement to join, to this very day, it has been a very calming and enjoyable experience. There is no reason why someone wouldn't want to work at my company. I can also happily say the same with my learning provider.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Jisc?
  • There is not much advice i can give as the company are very welcoming and helpful however if i was to give something it would be to not be too stressed about interviews or about the work, there are so many people around to ask questions and to guide you through that you never have to feel stressed and just like me, the first 7 months will fly by!
