  • I am a scientific degree apprentice working in the company labs on a day-to-day basis, this involves: Scientific analysis of samples to ensure work is continuing correctly Entering results of analysis using computer based programs Training in new methods of analysis working within a team to complete the daily workload

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Developed my ability in analytical skills through learning new methods and building upon experiences in old methods. Developed team working skills through working in a team consistently on a daily basis My ability to work independently and take responsibility for my own safety and the safety of others has also increased

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy working with people who have many years experience in the field of work I wish to progress in and feel as though this benefits me a lot the work is engaging and interesting and the learning involved on the programme is well managed and delivered by people who are experienced in training

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel the structure of my programme within the workplace is very good and the training and support given by members of my team is very beneficial, however the university side of my course involves poor teaching and little organisation within the college and they are not open to constructive criticism about the course

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer provides a large amount of support in terms of training and also to allow me to excel in the academic side of my apprenticeship as I am provided with time to complete any assignments and work given to me by the university throughout the working day which I find extremely helpful

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have a review with my training provider every three months, as I am relatively new I have only had one of these but there is a support system there should I need it. I am not ordinarily in contact with my training provider unless they have information about my course

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification is suited to my job role and gives me the more academic ability that I need as well as the methodical, training side of my role. This helps support my training in the workplace and can also help me to progress in my job role, after my apprenticeship has ended

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are numerous opportunities given by my company, such as the opportunity to become a STEM ambassador, which also helps to count toward my apprenticeship standards, the opportunities given are more geared towards helping the community and furthering the importance of science in schools and other workplaces using apprentices and employees as ambassadors

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The opportunities provided by the company are multidimensional and the ability to progress through the company is evident from day one. The qualifications provided by the company are of a degree level and the on the job training is given at a high standard. The job is interesting and the people are enjoyable to work with


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sellafield Ltd?
  • Know what the company does and some history about it before you enter the interview. Show that you are interested not only in the job but the opportunities provided alongside it, and that you are well-rounded individual who will be an asset to the company. Show you have a passion and interest in the specific job role you are applying for
