  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Currently our main role is to ensure all training courses are completed with knowledge taken away from the courses. With university and training at the main training centre, a lot of time is scheduled first year to ensure the initial foundations can be built upon. Working on site to use our training whilst under supervision is also part of the scheduled program.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • A lot of the training has developed skills from my previous job. Having completed courses within Aston university, this has allowed development of theories. Practical skills have also been developed with mechanical and electrical skills. Knowledge of how our company can affect the environment is also a skill that has been developed to ensure of a tactical approach for all jobs completed in the future.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been enjoyable, due to the diverse amount of courses completed so far. With uni courses, training off-site (Practical and knowledge based), every week is different. The structure of the courses highlight how well planned they are. The varying of training types such as practical and classroom based allow for all types of learning.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is extremely well structured. It is available for apprentices to access the yearly programme, so that they can plan their own work schedule. The programme is varied from week to week, which is refreshing to maximise training potential. All courses have been well organised by the tutors, meaning that it hasn't been organised last minute.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support is available from the company in multiple ways. We have our training manager who is always available for any concerns or questions regarding university or off site training. Support is also offered from all individuals on site such as team leaders and engineers. They understand our position and are always willing to assist with any issues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive a good amount of support from the training provider for the qualifications being worked towards. They are always available on the phone or via email for any questions or issues that may arise whilst completing coursework or revision when off site. Also previous years are available to assist with any concerns

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification being completed are the foundations of the job role for the future. A lot of the work being completed has relevance to site, along with the equipment of the transmission network. It also allows for an understanding of the design stages of the network, which allows for a better knowledge of the system.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Whilst at the training centre, there are activities available to become involved with. The football pitch and the mountain bikes are available for individuals or groups to participate with in the evening. The bar quiz is also another opportunity to allow people to get to known one another outside of working hours.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The training as an overall gives all individuals the foundations to become a valued engineer in the future. This allows other opportunities within the business, such as planning and research and development. Opportunities to become involved with the training and mentoring of apprentices gives a varying of options for the future within National Grid.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • I would speak to all individuals to ensure that they help one another through the course. Our group has a variety of experience from different backgrounds, which ensures that everyone can learn from one another . The programme also allows for individuals to develop as an individual with the support of many within the business.
