1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As a work experience student I have helped the trainees with their work. I have created summaries of complex documents, made templates for letters to be written to clients, such as particulars of claim, and researched various companies and laws to help with their work. I have also read through case files and witness statements. I also spend an hour each day at lunch, sitting with trainees and other lawyers. I have represented the firm at a cricket game against clients.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have become more familiar with fields of law that I previously had no experience in such as litigation, and have become more adept at proof-reading and summarising documents.

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I greatly enjoyed becoming part of a new team each day, and learning valuable information by conversing with trainees over lunch. I have become familiar with the various paths to becoming a lawyer, receiving useful advice on each one.

4. How valued do you feel by Pinsent Masons?

Highly valued, as the tasks I complete contribute in a small way towards active cases.

5. How well organised/structured is your programme?

Highly organised. I sit with a new department each day, with the trainees collecting us from a fixed meeting point each day. We have scheduled talks designed to relay important information about the firm and a legal career, and are trained at the start to use the IT systems in the firm, receiving our own account and email adress.

6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

We were able to contact IT and HR if we became stuck with anything, and our trainees were always happy to advise and lend a hand. Everybody seemed happy to help.

6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?

The trainees, who acted as our mentors, took it upon themselves to always ensure we had tasks to complete. If we ever became stuck they were happy to help.

7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?

N/A. The work experience is unpaid.

8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?

The work experience students were able to participate in company events. I was able to play cricket for the firm after work one evening.

9. Would you recommend Pinsent Masons to a friend?

9b. Why?

It is a structured, well organised work experience programme that provides a great deal of information on various fields and careers within law. it offers a great insight into what it is like to work for a firm.
