  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I prepare statutory accounts for businesses across a diverse range of industries. I'm also involved in preparing tax computations, and going to networking events. In terms of statutory accounts, I prepare financial statements from information provided by clients, and then insert the relevant disclosures needed for each individual client.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills in my apprenticeship so far. I have learnt how to prepare accounts, tax computations, and engagement letters for new and existing clients. I have also built on my existing skills of public speaking (by speaking in large team meetings), and of organising team events (by organising team socials).

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am thoroughly enjoying my programme. RSM is a great firm to work for, both in terms of the training they provide, the support they provide, and the overall atmosphere of the company. Everyone is incredibly friendly and treated with respect, and will never make you feel bad for asking lots of questions.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is incredibly well structured. I am tasked with many challenging activities when I am work, and supervised until I am able to do them myself, and I am also given plenty of time off for study. I am given block releases to go to college in preparation of each exam.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive an incredible amount of support from my employer. They pay for all of my training, each of my exams, and they help me with anything I ask. When I have to attend medical appointments they are very lenient and as long as I make up the time when I can, they are very flexible.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider provides a great deal of support leading up to exams. They provide courses where we are given folders with all the information we need as well as a question bank to help us practice. The tutors are all very helpful. They also provide a virtual learning programme where you can listen to webinars or practice questions on an online format.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification helps me to perform better in my role because a lot of the work in AAT relates to what I do on a day-to-day basis. For example, the bookkeeping aspect of the qualification has helped me massively in better understanding the process of preparing financial statements and accounts.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of extra-curricular activities at RSM. There are sports days, football teams (that play a national competition before the winners take part in a European competition), bike rides, social events, professional networking events, and so many more. The firm is heavily involved with charities, and thus there are also a lot of fundraising events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great firm to work for, who provide plenty of support in many ways, but mainly in preparing for exams and getting your accounting qualifications. They are a very social firm who are always looking for team bonding opportunities, and they provide plenty of opportunities to progress in your career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSM?
  • I would recommend people to just be themselves. The firm is very much about recruiting people with great personalities, not just in terms of getting on with people but also in terms of a good, positive attitude towards work. They are very friendly, and if you've got any questions, then just ask them.
