  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Preparing accounts and financial statements including consolidated and group accounts, preparing MI, VAT returns. Internally I work within a team of around 20 people closely in AFR, but more widely with around 150 who we liaise with daily to provide an accounting package which consists of audit, accounts and tax.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently studying for AAT level 4, with two exams left until complete. I regularly reflect on what skills have been improved to assess where I have improved and what areas still require improvements. These skills include teamworking, communication, leadership, planning, prioritisation and analytical skills. I also regularly attend and complete training provided by my employer.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme as the company I work for is generally very good to work for, I feel I am adequately challenged in my day to day work as such there is never a dull moment. This coupled with a close knit team of professionals gives me a good basis for professional development in the work place.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Overall pretty well organised, we have a mentor internally and externally with the training provider. However, myself and a few colleagues seem to have been forgotten in the course of starting level 4 as such we have lagged behind others now at work that started after us through no fault of our own.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A significant amount of support is given internally through mentoring (If needed), training, shadowing. We are given time off to study for our exams, which is usually down at a college in Manchester, as well as this we are given the morning off prior to exams if we require it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • An ample amount of support is given by the training provider our company uses. We attend college courses to learn the material for the exam, and they provide us with a textbook, and learning materials to enable us to learn the course easily. They recently stopped providing the revision passcards, which were extremely useful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think that my qualification helps me to perform better in my day to day work given I use it in my day to day tasks. I use the theory we learn at college daily to enable me to complete accounts fully and accurately. I definitely know more about my profession through completing the qualification.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are multiple extra curricular, team building activities that work allows us to do. We hold mindfulness sessions in the training centre and are encouraged to attend on a weekly basis, there are office quizzes held monthly to encourage us to work with people we wouldn't usually as well.

  • 9a. Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • RSM has helped to me develop not only professionally but socially as well. The team I work within has been so welcoming and helpful from the day I started that I can't imagine working elsewhere at this moment in time. The career progression path is clear and I can already seem myself working in a higher role in the coming years.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSM?
  • Although the application process is quite long, once the online aptitude tests have been passed it is quite a normal process to the final job interview. A HR interview takes place as well as an assessment centre, at which you will be assessed by managers in the team you may be working for. I suggest researching the profession and ensure you have a question or two to fire back at the managers after the interview.
