  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work directly with the public, planning and selling kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms. On an average day, I will normally design at least one project from start to finish, as well as dealing with any issues that may arise from the customer's perspective, such as delivery issues or technical queries

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • So far, I have only really started to scratch the surface of the apprenticeship. I have worked in the same role for many years, so I already have a lot of experience in dealing with difficult situations, but I think that as I work further through the programme, I will learn a lot of new techniques to make it easier to do so

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have always relished the chance to learn more, and this has given me the opportunity to do so. It is a long time since I last undertook any formal education, so the chance to work through something as simple as my maths and english skills has reminded me that I have intelligence to share with others

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As I am still in the early stages of the programme, I do not think I am into the complete structure of it yet. I am hoping that as time goes on, there will be a clear path for me to follow, and that I will be able to make a real difference to the way I work

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • So far, as I am still working through the basics, I have had very little support. I am supposed to be able to use some of my work week to go through my training, but so far, I have not managed to do this in any consistant way. I have spoken to my manager, but was asked to perform other tasks in preference, which has been frustrating, but I am managing to get short periods in which to go through things

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My trainer has been very good so far. She has made sure that I am happy with what I am doing, that I have the basics in place before I try to go further. She has been quick to respond with information when requsted, and has kept me informed of my progress with the english exam part of my programme

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have been able to review previous learnings, and impliment them in ways I had not done for some time - learning that I received some years ago, and which had possibly lapsed from my regular usage. This has then helped me to deal with things better, and also to try and pass on the knowledge I have to my colleagues

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We do not have any current extra-curricular activities going on. We occasionally hold charity type events in store, which get most of the staff involved. There are also sometimes work nights out, which are great fun when we get a good turn out, and normally include bowling, but have also been a pub quiz and bingo nights

  • 9a. Would you recommend B&Q to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • B&Q is a stable environment. The work is hard at times, and can be heavy, too, but the team around you will help if you ask. My store especially has very much of a family feel, as if we all are here to care for each other. The work is honest, and helping customers to fulfil their dreams for a better home is very rewarding

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to B&Q?
  • Just because it is retail, doesn't mean is is an easy job. In my role, I have to be able to handle difficult situations, as well as having the artistic flare to bring dream rooms to life. It is a long time since I interviewed for my job, and things have changed since then. The current process normally involves some kind of group interview, and successful applicants then normally follow an induction process. As a regular member of staff, there is not much progress that can be made, but there are training options to progress towards management positions
