  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is a trainee fibre jointer for Openreach which is to build a fibre network that is going to be for the future. On a day-to-day basis I am using all sorts of different tools and equipment to build splitters, optical network terminals and customer splice points which in turn gains customers and gives customers the fasters broadband speeds they have ever seen.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have taken a variety of different training courses and qualifications which includes: my induction week, gas training, cover lifting, hand rodding, EUSR, your visit counts customer service, signing lighting and guarding, fibre foundation and retro build, OTDR, poles, steps and ladders, ground support and drop wire and fibre drop. I have never learnt so many new skills in such a short period of time before which is an amazing experience.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my job and the programme I have been working on. I have learnt so many new skills about engineering at Openreach and have also furthered all of my skills in general. I am excited about what else I am going to learn in the future. It feels as if there is something new to learn everyday.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Its the best structured programme I have ever had. When I first started I was provided with a list of my training courses that I am booked on for my first thirteen weeks which includes the location of training, content of training and also the most detailed training I have received.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received constant support from my employer since my start date. It has been really good. My training manager and my actual manager has been supportive. I always receive emails informing me of any updates or any events which is really good as I feel as if I am always being kept informed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive lots of support from my training provider when working towards my qualification by given NVQ workshops days to help me get some work done towards my qualification as well as all the work I do in my own time at home. Also my assessor is always there to help if I send him a text or email.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualifications and training I have gained during my time so far has helped me understand how to do my job when I am actually out doing this in the field. I have also been given all the tools and equipment which helps me perform the best I can when I have been out buddying and also on my own.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of extra-curricular activities to get involved in which can be visited on the BT intranet site. They have social activities and professional networking events. All news about events can be found on the BT today page. These activities and events are for all employees of Openreach to get involved in which helps with team building.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend this to a friend and I have already have because this is the best company I have ever worked for and the best training I have ever participated in. This skills I have learnt have been really good and worthwhile. The company also really appreciates all of its employees.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • To show willingness that you want to learn new skills, further your training and work for a massive company. I would give them advice about the training I have received and what my job entails on a day to day basis. I would also tell them to visit the Openreach website before applying to read all about what it takes to be an engineer.
