  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am part of an audit team that delivers assurance to a client that the figures used in the financial statements are fair and accurate. Each person is assigned tasks to look at on the various accounts that the company have, these tasks are handed off to a senior individual of the team for review.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The scheme has really helped me develop my communication skills. The nature of the job is that you are expected to interact both with your team the global teams and your clients. Through this I feel that my communication skills have become enhanced and as I have learnt more I have felt more comfortable in speaking about the work that is being done.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • From my experience the programme is very difficult and challenging however it is extremely rewarding when an engagement is complete. It is also an advantage at this young age to have money and this is something where my friends at uni are jealous. There is no denying though that the work can be very challenging

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course is very well organised and is a great stepping career building scheme. By doing the accountancy qualifications upon completion of this you are in a position that no other will be at the same age with really good career prospects. There is also a good mix of college time and work time and some chances to do other things outside of work

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • They are very good with help and with the size of the company they have everything covered to ensure you are settled which is a huge advantage of the size of the business. Counsellors and buddies are also provided and you have a good sized peer (year) around you which I have found to be very supportive.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Our training providers have been very helpful as well. You get an extensive work folder and have full support from the teachers. There is also an online resource with loads of helpful tests and elearning. You will get email resources also sent so I have found them really helpful with the college work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have not had much experience of this as I have only so far had just over a week at college, but I believe that what we do in college is very relevant to what we will be doing at work. An understanding of accountancy is sure to help you with the work and feel more confident discussing your work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a lot of Friday night drinks and the occasional social as well as team socials. EY have a football team and cricket team also which compete in leagues consisting of similar firms. As well as the normal work there are also opportunities to do stuff like recruitment events which get you out of the office for a bit which is a nice change of scenery.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • EY is a really strong platform if not more for a successful career in the financial industry. As a big company they have a lot of support network and resources available to an employee and the experience that you will gain from this scheme is invaluable for either a career in EY where you will move up the ladder in the 5 years or a career outside of the company


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • I would say research about the company a lot and understand the role that you will be taking. Establish whether the companies policies and competencies align with your own and if they do use this to your advantage in an interview by linking your experiences to these. Also I would encourage you to get as much experience under your belt before applying so that for the application you have a lot of examples to why the competencies suit you and what experiences of skills you have.
