  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working as an apprentice Quantity surveyor involves dealing with subcontractors and clients on a daily basis. The tasks in which you are given by your line manager will have the same principles behind them but will be different each time. My role currently is to assist the commercial manager with the handling of the subcontractor. Whilst being on site I am still completing my college work on a weekly basis, which is monitored by regular Skype calls from tutor to check progress.

  • I have learned many new skills and feel more confident as an individual since beginning this apprenticeship. The social skills as well as academic skills you learn from college are highly beneficial. Communicating with other apprentices everyday builds bonds with different people. Whilst being on site I have attended health and safety courses to develop my understanding of the most important part of the construction industry. Working on site at has also allowed me to develop my skills in order to work well within my team and be a real assistance to the project.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Having achieved my level 3 in my first college block, I have been able to take through the skills I have learnt and the knowledge of the construction industry gained to my on site role. Having that insight into construction before going on site made me feel more comfortable as i had an idea of what to expect and the sort of things i would be dealing with on a day to day basis.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Whilst at college we had organised meals for all bam apprentices as well as group events like go-karting and bowling. Being at college with other apprentices who are in the same position as you, socializing with them comes naturally because you are surrounded by the same people each day. Our group set up a 5 aside football team whilst at college which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
