  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I assist the commercial team with a variety of tasks that a quantity surveyor would do with guidance and support from my superiors and other apprentices. I often help with payments, subcontract requisitions and many other various tasks. The mix of independence with support and guidance as required gives a professional learn as you go experience

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed the programme so far I have made lots of new friends, learned how to live independently and expanded my professional outlook. I have enjoyed being on sight and in the office with a relaxed and healthy atmosphere. In my opinion BAM Nuttall treats its employees extremely well compared to any other company I have experience with or have worked along side.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I Think the programme is very well structured with set time parameters of when we go to sight and college. It was very clear as soon as we visited the first introduction everything was planned in advance to give us the required support as and when we needed. We are all assigned a line manager who helps us by giving us clear guidance when needed however enough independence to let us be an individual and useful part of the team.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive plenty of support! This is vastly shown by how Bam signed for my accommodation in hull alongside giving me a living away from home allowance to cover my bills and accommodation on top of my wage. Furthermore the early careers manager [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was always ready to help with any queries or concerns we had about anything to do with the apprenticeship. Whilst also offering guidance and direction as and when it’s needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We received a wide range of training from health and safety to science in materials, these were all specifically tailored to our situation, each lecture was supported with slides on a site called 'black board' this was a server for us to upload our assignments and to see the lectures.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe having a deeper insight and mild capability (given I have only started studying the level 4 at this given time) has given us an smoother transition to site. However having said that I believe that I have gained more industry knowledge and technical experience on site, which can often not be accessed with a class based system

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are several sports leagues bam provides with other activities for the not so sporty. For example technical training and computer based activity's. I have also recently attended the BAM Nuttall road show in which I spoke to our CEO [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] which was a refreshing thing to do as often in big industry the executives sometimes don't interact as often.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have had a life changing experience that has set me aside from my friends and others my own age it has given me a view on what the bigger picture, one that no amount of A levels or fancy Degrees could give me, I have learned many skills and I hope to have many more new experiences to come.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • I would say that you have to be ready to give full commitment. It is difficult moving away from home and being fully independent. I started when I was 16 years old which was very exiting however I would recommend that you wait till you are 18 to apply as it can be difficult getting accommodation when on site.
