  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is working on a shift pattern of 2day2nights 12hr shifts with 4 days off and one day of college. Learn off existing technicians and specialists carrying out different tasks from regular maintenance to fault finding and part replacement. I then rotate to different sections every 4months over 3 years.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have developed on many existing skill and learnt many new skills also mainly in the machining and fabrication sector or which my Level 2 at college was based on. The apprenticeship helps to build upon knowledge and skills but also not forgetting about soft skills. These are critical within any business

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Overall I believe the programme could be much better than it is but due to poor organisation, communication and direction it has not reached a potential that it could be and therefore although I enjoy it, it has become extremely frustrating over the apprenticeship. But again this would be another building block upon soft skills (take a negative and find a solution to form a positive)

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Overall there is poor organisation, there is poor structure and poor college structure. There is a deep underlying poor communication issue throughout the business. However this could be solved and in many cases extremely easily. Much needed improvement and would suggest other means in order to improve afternoon nothing will be perfect.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • When you ask, you can receive much needed support. However sometimes by the time you have asked it could be too late or you'll have minimal time to rectified an issue. Nonetheless I believe if you ask you'll get the support that you need! It just depends on how comfortable you feel and who you'd have to go to

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Our training provider has been fairly unorganised and just rocky from the start. However again if you needed support you could request this and there would be a process or means which would enable you to receive multiple forms of support. It's just difficult when you have a training provider which is being paid by the business and Comms is poor.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think this is a hard question as I believe it depends on previous experience and qualifications. Doing the qualifications do help with the job role the only question is do you remember what you were taught? Should time be provided for consolidation? Should refreshers be offered on many courses?

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a few. Otherwise nothing has been mentioned to me apart from those few. But of the few I know there is a yearly careers event held at T5 Sofitel and lasts the whole days its first half is mainly for schools and secondary half for the general public. We also hold the secondary school challenge across 4/5months in various schools.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Heathrow Academy to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend the job role as Heathrow is an extremely stable business and will be for years to come. Therefore it would provide a good solid foundation to get you going. It would just depend on the age I would be recommending it to and what their goal would be

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Heathrow Academy?
  • Just be yourself, at the end of the day you can mould someone into greatness but being honest with yourself is what will give you purpose, satisfaction and most of all a sense of belonging. Speak formally, speak with someone and not AT them, show passion, pride and determination. Plus most of all show team work, willingness and problem solving
