  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an apprentice on the insurance/reinsurance stream, working in the public sector team; the clients I work with are public bodies such as councils and universities. I mainly assist my project manager with work required during the renewal/tender process. This is largely assisting in the creation of important renewal documents, as well as attending important meetings.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My IT skills have increased exponentially, I am now competent with Excel and the Windows platform in general. My ability to converse has improved significantly. Being in a client facing role requires me to speak to others constantly whether that's at meeting or a telephone conversation. Outside of the work place full time employment has taught me how to manage my time and finances.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Of course there are some aspects of the programme I enjoy more others. I much prefer days that involve client meetings as that gives me a real sense of purpose. On the whole though I enjoy each day at work, largely to do with the welcoming work force we have here at Aon.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme I am has a strict structure and time scale. You assigned a talent coach to guide you through your studies with reguar 1 to 1s and a group workshop every few months. They work closely with your line manager to ensure studies are being completed in line with work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Any support I require is offered. Should I need my own work/study space I can have my own room for a day to allow me to concentrate. This is greatly encouraged by my manager. My workload is managed according to my ability and should it become too much support and guidance is there.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider assigns me a talent coach, we regularly have 1 on 1s and they can be contacted via email or mobile should you need their assitance. Group workshops delievered by a field expert on the modules you are studying frequently take place also. Members of your team also help wherever they can.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The modules that our training provider has us study are completely applicable to my day to day work. Studying the theory around my day to day practice has greatly improved my performance. The increased depth in knowledge is what allows me to develop within my role and this is guided by our training provider.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are regular industry events, such as networking events and annual dinners. Within my office there are regular after work meet ups and we even have a 5 a side team I am apart of. Every year Aon hosts an office 5 a side tournament I shall be participating in.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The transferable skills I have learned already here at Aon gives me confidence I can succeed in any role. Aon has a huge diversity and inclusion mantra which I believe lacks at other firms and it is something which I believe to be extremely important. The welcoming attitude we have at Aon means I would recommend them to anyone.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aon?
  • Aon is such a large firm and has many different areas. Make you sure you research the role you are applying and make sure its right for you. Further to that, research other areas of the business, see if you believe its a firm you can progress and find a role suitable to you.
