  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis I am involved in the management of large clients pension funds. This typically involves preparing more senior members of staff for client meetings through the preparation of meeting papers and organisation of meeting packs. I also frequently deal with monthly billing, invoices and third party advisers.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Specifically I have learnt mostly about how to conduct meetings in terms of how they specifically work and function. I have also learnt how businesses such as Aon raise their fees in terms of billing. I have also developed my skills in engaging in business communications with internal members of staff but also external individuals such as clients.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work and study balance is very good, I am not over worked and am given time to train each week as well as 5 study days per exam. I enjoy the working environment, the new office is bright and airy with good facilities such as standing up desks. I also enjoy the social aspect of football on a Monday evening with people from the office.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised, initially our 2 week induction put us in good stead. Following on from this I am kept up to date with changes and news through monthly meetings with my talent coach who usually comes in for a face to face meeting. I also meet with other apprentices for training.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer. Training is frequent through internal Webex calls, monthly development meetings, weekly manager catch ups and revision days. We are also given all study material as well as tips for best practice. On top of this we get 5 study days per exam.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I meet with my talent coach once a month. This is usually through a face to face meeting however sometimes this is a call. The meetings last around an hour and he gives feedback on tasks set, tasks to me about what I have been getting up to and talks about topical issues.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As I am only just studying for my first exam, it is hard to give a fully justified answer to this question. From what I have currently learnt, I am being given an overview of the industry as a whole. As I progress things will be more tailored towards my job role as I use case studies.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I play football every Monday evening with around 10 others from Aon. This is great fun and I really enjoy this aspect of the job! There are also occasional events such as bowling, pub nights, go carting and other events. We also have Aon days 3 times a year which gives us time out of out job to take part in a range of activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The culture of Aon is great. Everyone is friendly and willing to help, there is no one that believes they are too important to give you some time out of their day or advice. Everyone is approachable! The offices are modern and the ability to be able to work from home is a bonus.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aon?
  • Be yourself, do not try to push a fake persona. Everyone in the office is smiley and happy, maybe take something from that to show that you are the same! Show your abilities to solve problems quickly and efficiently. This is important as you will be under tight time restrictions and still have to produce results consistently to a high standard.
