  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves a mixture of engineering and project management. Every day holds a different problem which my team and myself have to find solutions to overcome. I do calculations, organise and lead meetings, conduct site inspections and surveying. I speak with trade contractors and make sure that their works are correct and that the foundations are taking the load correctly.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have greatly increased my social skills, from communication on the phone to public speaking, problem solving skills and software skills. I have also learnt how to manage people contractors. This requires a variety of skills including all of those above, as well as time management, organization and leadership skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my programme and I frequently talk about it to my friends and family. I am proud to work for Mace and I am proud to be on such a good scheme. The programme is difficult and asks a lot from the apprentices but it is still very enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is fairly well organised. On the odd occasion last year meeting invites where not properly sent out for training events. Our training provider could have been better with timetables as well. Otherwise all was good. There were not many incidents where training invites were not sent and this has not happened this year.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am always within reach of support. Whenever I need help there is always someone to talk to if it is needed. We also have regular check ups with the HR team to ensure we are on the right track. I am lucky enough to have a good line manager who I sit next to. He offers me support daily and is always able to either help, or point me in the right direction.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support from LSBU is good. There are revision classes and a personal tutor to help guide us. Only issue is that some of the lecturers find it difficult to explain complex terms in English which is not practical for those who are struggling. Having said this, Lecturers always upload their slides and notes for us to use.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have used my university knowledge to do calculations on site and to help me understand some of the materials and benefits of using these materials. Ultimately it helps me to understand the technical side of my role. There are a few bits of my qualification that do not fit into my specific role as I am not a Civil Engineer. However it is still useful to have the knowledge.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes. Mace are involved in a number of different fundraising and charity events for us to get involved in. They also organise events like football tournaments and tag rugby. Mace also give volunteering days to go off of site and help the communities near by. I have also done a few speeches at schools and the Parliament.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Not only have Mace given me an amazing opportunity to start my career, they have also shown countless times that they look after their employees. I am consistently impressed by the benefits that Mace gives to its employees and the projects that they win. I also like the fact that they encourage new ideas.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • Research the company. I researched Mace before my interview to ensure that I knew their biggest projects and what went well or did not go well on them. Prepare for the interview. Be confident and don't be afraid to voice your ideas. If you don't get in, don't be afraid to try again the following year.
