  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Start of with the 7:30 Start of Shift in the morning, a requirement to go out on site. After, i ensure all the required permits are written up and handed out prior to works on site starting. I then log the works going on outside on site and record them in a diary. Other activities include taking meter readings, setting out points using equipment and solving problems on site.

  • Have developed lots of skills over the last 7 months. Communication has improved vastly as i speak to a wide range of people in all sorts of areas. my confidence in myself has grown as i have been given more responsibility. • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme i'm undertaking. Granted, its a very long course, but i'm constantly learning something new both in the work place and at university. Combined, my knowledge and experiences of site practises and theory have helped me develop into an engineer who can easily work on site alongside my co-workers.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very well structured. It was stated clearly what i would be doing and the requirements my co-workers would need from me. However, as my responsibility has grown, I am doing work i wasn't expected to do. This isn't a bad thing, it is something i'm very pleased about,

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employer. Any questions i have are answered straight away. I haven't had any problems so far and i hope to keep it that way. Support in terms of university from colleagues has been great, i can easily do university work in the work place easily without feeling judged ect.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive lots of support from my university. We are always learning and can easily ask questions if unsure on a related topic. Luckily for me, soon far everything we've covered has already been taught to me at work from co-workers and being on site. But overall, i am receiving substantial support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • With both work place experiences and university learning combined, i have been able to excel in my role quite quickly. I still get things wrong, but as an apprentice, making mistakes is how we learn. combined, i have learned a great deal and has helped me perform my role better as a feel more confident in what i'm doing,

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We take turns organising social events for out team. Being in the civils team we work alongside most people in the office or on site. So the social events are normally quite big. These provide a great opportunity to bond and build friendships amongst colleagues which makes working in the work place much better.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There's every reason to join them. Everything is structured in a way where there's not a single thing to worry about, being an apprentice to a full time employee. Plus, the salary and perks are very good too. In terms of job responsibility, its spot on to what everyone would want.

  • Apply as soon as the window opens because its very difficult to get in. Lots of people want to work for Costain and there's a reason why. Make sure you have enough work experience and suitable qualifications. Costain is a great company full of great people who are willing to work hard and learn.
