Flying start 1 Review

This is an assurance based program. We carry out various audit tests as part of an audit team. An FS1 is the same level as an AS1 who has just graduated. We work closely with senior associates to carry out testing. There is also client exposure as you may be based on client site where there are opportunities to interact with the client

This placement has massively improved my Excel skills. It is important to have some basic Excel proficiency before starting, but you quickly learn shortcuts as you work. It has also developed my communication skills as this is key in carrying out audit. My knowledge of the academic side of audit and assurance has been hugely improved, which I am hoping will be very beneficial to my exams.

I have really enjoyed my first placement at PwC. It has allowed me to make lots of friends from many different walks of life and given me invaluable exposure to clients. There are so many different activities available amongst the hard work. This really has been one of the most sociable experiences in a work environment.

The structure of the degree program is set out from the outset. It is very clear what we are doing and exactly when we are doing it. The placements are carried out during busy season which is very useful as you can experience the most difficult part of the year within audit.

There are weekly welfare emails which ensure that everything is going well at a very stressful time. There are so many different people you can talk to if you are struggling at PwC, and they can adjust your working hours if they are getting too much. They are very understanding about illness and are always willing to give you all the help you need

There is lots of support from the university with developing skills for the ACA. Most of the lecturers know exactly what they are talking about and are quick to respond to any queries. The key contact at the university is lovely and approachable. Books are provided for the ACA from PwC which is extremely useful.

Having the academic knowledge before going onto placement gives you a background and prepares you for the technical knowledge required in audit whilst on placement. Placement then secures this knowledge, and makes the subjects make a lot more sense. The balance between study and work makes you feel much more confident in your knowledge and ability to apply this in the workplace.

Whilst on placement in busy season, there are less activities through work than there usually would be at less busy times of the year. Although, there are still social meet ups and everyone is placed into a social group at work. There are many flying start networking event, usually around once a month, to help you build your network, and there have been talks of creating a football and netball team at the office.

It is a very social environment that makes you feel very included. There are lots of opportunities to try new types of work and clients. There is a lot of support from more senior people in the firm. The office is so diverse and you get to meet a whole range of people. The coffee machines are also great

Be confident with your application, but do not claim to know things you don't. Integrity really is key. Be sure to research the firm and their values before going to any interviews or completing any applications. Show an interest in all types of opportunities at work and be enthusiastic.
