  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • When I am away in Leeds in our 3 month college block, we are learning for our Level 3 Diploma. When on site my day to day job varies, it can be from managing costs to doing time sheets, doing subcontract payments and being involved in meetings with my team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting the apprenticeship I have gained a Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma. When away studying in Leeds, we have learnt about how to use surveying equipment. As a Quantity Surveyor there are a variety of applications that we use on a daily basis so my technical skills have also improved.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy this programme. It gave me a chance to explore other places in the UK and also showed me what moving away from home is like. It is really good when the other apprentices are in the exact same situation as you so everyone gets along really well.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is generally a well structured programme. We are informed by our manager about when we are due to be away in Leeds at college and the duration of this college block. We are then informed (normally this is near the end of the college block) where our site will be.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I get a lot of support from my employer. I can contact my line manger at any time and i am able to get support when needed. When in college, I am able to email or phone my manager whenever I can and I am extremely grateful for the support I received

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Leeds college of building are understanding in the fact that we are doing a lot in such a short time period. They are there for any questions needed. Our tutors are always there at the college and are always open to talk to us whether it is in class or not.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps you gain knowledge of what kind of industry you are working in. The qualification helped me before I started on my site placement. Although as a Quantity Surveyor we did do some topics that is more so aimed at a Civil Engineer, it was good to expand my knowledge on this.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • When in College, there are football games for the boys to play that the college provides and many social events where everyone in the apprenticeship for BAM comes together and do activities such as bowling, restaurants etc. A similar concept when on site such as nights out and socializing altogether.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BAM Nuttall gave me the chance to gain experience and knowledge in the construction industry in which I never thought I would. No two days are the same and especially having that split of being away in College in Leeds and then being on site makes it more exciting for me.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • My advice would be to be prepared to work away from home. I would also say that when preparing for the interview day is to know all the safety signs and slogans. You will know it is the right choice to choose BAM Nuttall's apprenticeship scheme once the assessment day comes.
