engineering maintenance apprenitceship Review

Learning to become a full time engeineering mainteance apprentice by hands on learning control and insturmentation jobs performed on station. Completing my own learning by finding out how the station works by reading manuals. Driving to complete my own qualification manual as proof of my learning and qualification once i am out my time.

I have learnt basic hands skills at HMS sultan and learnt basics of how to maintain a bevvel gear (mechanical job ) i have additionally learned basics within electrical engeineering and how to perform sparky jobs ( how to strip and make wiring ) I have Developed exsiting social skills/ life skills. I am additionally completing my HNC in control and instrumentation which will help me later within my career

I have really enjoyed the apprenticeship so far. Moving away from home to portsmouth for 2 years was a great experience as i have never left home before as i had left school and went straight into employment as apposed to going to uni. It has also opened my mind to a long career in engineering as i enjoy the theory as well as physcially doing the jobs

The programme is very well structured. It is programmed that you spend 2 years knowledge learning at hms sultan in portsmouth. This is to allow all apprentices from other stations bond as at some time in our career we may end up working together. As well as buiulding a basic level of knowledge for all apprentices. Following this is 2 years on site learning as well as day release to complete HNC.

Support within the apprenticeship is constant. Regular stress and well being meetings ensures all apprentices are coping and allows them to highlight any areas they are struggiling with. This could also be from the 2 years down in portsmouth. On station support comes from your colleagues, team leaders and techincal mentors that are assigned to us

Down south we had constant support available to us from instructors, staff as well as the ability to speak to our apprentice manager who was edf staff. Back on site im unaware of the support we recieve from the training provider as supprot is given to us through our apprentice coordinator.

The qualifications i have gained so far through babcocks training at HMS SULTAN has gave me a great base knowledge and level of hand skills i did not have prior to starting the apprenticeship. Attending college to gain a HNC Gives me a much better understanding of theory i was previously unaware about.

At my nuclear power station there are internal extra curricular activities to get involved in. There is a golf club which im intrested in getting involved in. This helps to create good working relationships and helps apprenitces get noticed as getting involved with other people from other teams and departments

edf is a great company to work for. They are focused on producing a great working enviroment and producing the best and safest work force. There is many career paths within edf and they are great at aiding you in achiving career goals and aspirations. I have recommended friends to join edf in the past

Something good to learn is the basics of how a nuclear power station creates power. You want to prepare on how to complete psycometric testing/ logic decision making as this is within the first stage of the assesment centre that is within the application process. Additionally ensuring how to work well within a team as this is 2nd stage of your assesment centre.
