Civil Engineering Apprentice Review

As a Civil Engineer with BAM Nuttall we start with a 3 month block in Leeds in which we complete the level 3, this time is where you can get to know all the other apprentices. On site we get to learn all the skills from hands on experience, this may be setting out however it is different day to day.

At BAM Nuttall they want to get you the best grades, this is why they put you on a 3 month block at Leeds college of building for your level 3 in which I achieved a distinction grade. Also during this program I have passed my CSCS test and I've got a NRSWA Supervisor course next week.

I really enjoy this program, I think it was important to start with the 3 month block so we could get to know all the other apprentices. This meant we had people going through the same experience that really improved the experience. I enjoy the job being a mixture of inside and outside work which means the work is always different.

Compared to other apprenticeship programs I've heard of this is really well organised. From when I arrived I haven't had a problem and I felt they have taken the years before us and actually acted on any negative feedback. They give us significant support however also give us the space to get the work done.

While we were at college our employer came to see us every few weeks, this was to check up on us and to answer and questions we may have. since I've been on site they have come once in the 3 months which is good as they have to get round the other 26 apprentices in my year. they always answer emails and give significant support for anything we need.

The training provider used by BAM Nuttall is the Leeds College of Building. This is a great facility split across two campuses in Leeds, North street and Hunslet. I really enjoyed the teaching I received over the months I was there and felt they provided me with everything I needed while I was there. The only thing I would say is that I much preferred the hunslet campus out of the two. However both provided sufficient food and entertainment to use in free time which we all enjoyed.

While at the College I completed my level 3 diploma in engineering. This provided me with great knowledge and basic understanding on the practical side of the job. While at the College one of the modules was surveying in which we got to use the equipment similar to that on site which was very beneficial. This meant that when I got to site I had the understanding necessary to do my job in which I could build on with time and experience.

While at College there was a great effort made to get us involved in activities. this would include table tennis tournaments at college as well as a five a side football team on a Wednesday evening. I would have joined however I tore my curricate ligament which means I'll have to wait till next year to play. At work there are always opportunities to get involved. These may be outdoor swimming, running at lunch and we may also be starting a five a side football team after work.

During my time with BAM I haven't had a single problem and they give you everything you will need in your career. They offer a very good salary which increases each year, they pay for any train tickets to and back from work and finally pay for your meals while we are at college.

Be positive and make friends will all the other apprentices right from the start. Stay in touch will the other apprentices, maybe make a group chat between you all. Be willing to stay away from home as about 50% of us were, however those who do get a working away from home allowance.
