  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In GE Aviation wales, we repair and overhaul commercial aircraft engines, such as the GE90, CFM and GP7000. I work in the repair section of this process. Everyday we receive parts from all engine types, that need some sort of repair work done to them. we start by checking part number and serial numbers and making sure the component belongs to the correct engine and all paperwork is correct, we then follow on to consult our engine and repair manuals and prepare to complete all work required. Once all the work is done, we finish up and paperwork left and move the part to the next shop where more work might be done, or where itll be prepared for module build.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • yes! I had very little experience with manual labour or any engineering work prior to starting the apprenticeship. The apprenticeship is perfect for people with experience or without, they will teach you everything you need to know in the classroom, and push you to learn as much as possible in the workshop too since the practical part is a huge part of the apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme was great, first year in the college we had support from all our tutors and our apprentice handler from GE. They always made sure we were looked after, and there were some pretty cool bonding events and trips. Once we started working alongside our studies, there were people dotted around on the shop floor with the role to support us and guide us on daily tasks and any questions we might have. That was the most important thing for me, being new to the working environment and not having any previous engineering experience, i was afraid to not understand things or get lost in the process, but i was very well looked after and managed to thrive in this environment.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • This apprenticeship programme has been running for many many years, and it is pretty well structured. They are always trying to incorporate new things and make it as fresh and exciting as possible for new apprentices, some ideas are great, some don't work too well, but the overall structure stays the same and is well explained once you join the programme. GE has received many awards for its apprenticeship programme,

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • In college our tutors were very helpful and supportive, as level 3 aircraft engineering students, we were expected to perform to a certain level, but that did not mean we were left to our own devices. The tutors were always available on the college email and we had preparation days prior to assignments and tests being issued. If people didn't perform as well as expected, we always had recap sessions and extra revision on the topic.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The training was focused but not limited to our job roles alone, i feel that with the knowledge we gained, we could work in many other fields of aircraft engineering, not just engines. With the training provided we have a better view and understanding of the aircraft industry as a whole and of how our job impacts the final product (the whole aircraft) and the job it does.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because it has been great to me personally, it is one of the best jobs in the local area, and it's a place that has the capability to provide anyone with all the necessary requirements to become and aircraft engineer. the apprenticeship has no age limit and can be a stepping stone into the industry for anyone at any stage of life or career.
