  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis my job role mainly includes working alongside my mentor who can be any member of the electrical department team who are all fully qualified electrical engineers. I have spent 9 months of my time here working alongside the onsite panel builder working on various new installs and upgrades to current panels and have spent the last 3 month with the onsite contracting team doing cable installs and and ladder work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since coming on site at the beginning of April last year I have learnt various skills as well as developed current ones too. Having lived on a farm all my life you get more used to working with tools than those who live in towns etc however as time goes on my accuracy and skill are continuing to improve. Electrically I have learnt loads as before coming to Egger I had not done any electrical work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far though my apprenticeship programme I have thoroughly enjoyed my time both at Egger and at TDR college to do the written work. In doing this course I have not only gained skills for life but also friends for life and so could not fault my time at Egger since starting in September 2017.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel my programme is very well organised and structured. At college we are given assessments which have due dates and therefore must be completed and handed in for marking on that week. The lessons are usually really well planned and in most classes I can’t fault the teaching provided.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I personally feel my employer is fantastic at providing me with support. I don’t often ask for much from him but my line manager has been very supportive and helpful for completing my project at college and he regularly checks in on me to see that I am up to date and happy.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • So far I feel I have been provided with adequate support when working towards my qualification here at Egger. We have recently been given a new apprenticeship training assessor who seems knowledgeable and hopes to get all of my onefile work completed ahead of target so that when I am ready to be signed off, I won’t be waiting for college work to be completed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think some parts of the qualification won’t actually help me perform better in my role as some of the subjects we do are completely not related to what we do on a day to day basis however there is some that although are not directly linked, they may be useful in working life.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At work there is numerous extra curricular activities that I can get involved with at work. There is sporting events, Egger runs, pants trips, work nights out and I have also been on two professional networking evenings, one which was to Westminster to meet the MPs and give a talk and the other was the north east buildings awards at which we won the apprenticeship award.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Egger to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Since coming to Egger I have had absolutely no regrets in changing jobs from a supermarket Assistant to an apprentice electrical engineer. Although I had to take a substantial pay drop in the first year it has definitely been worth is and I would advise anyone else in the same situation to go for it.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Egger?
  • A lot of potential apprenticeship come to our selection week and are quiet and not very chatty. I am not a particularly chatty person and am actually quite shy however if you are applying for a job that you really want you have to make the effort to stand out. You will not be noticed unless you make yourself noticed!
