  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Research of the new tax laws that are coming into play, and old tax laws that apply to the companies that I am working on. I also do a fair amount of admin, including filing, opening/closing codes and looking at codes. There is also putting through memo amendments and contacting EY in other countries to get their tax perspective on certain areas.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed many skills such as writing emails for both clients and internal purposes. I have learnt many tax rules and am slowly getting my head around how to apply them to different companies in different situations. I have also attended a few meetings, and my note taking is improving.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy it. I have learnt many new things, and everyone is happy to take the time to explain anything I don't understand and answer my questions. People of all levels are approachable, and are always willing to help you as and where they can. I also had the joy of staying in Birmingham for some of my training

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Relatively well structured and organised. I do feel like there is too long between my first lot of college and the exam for that college work, however this has given me a nice period of time to settle down in the company and do non exam related things. However I am worries about forgetting my college for my exam.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As much as I ask for which is really good. I also find I am often questioned as to whether I need support, so I don't always have to ask for it. But again, everyone is approachable and happy to support me, or suggest someone who might be able to support me better.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have had a few prompting emails so they have kept in contact with me. If I ask for help then they seem more than willing to try and give it to me. I do wish there was more in the way of support though, and they invited us to support sessions.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • A few things have connected and been helpful, however the qualification vs the job I do don't link much. I give advice on tax in my job, but getting a qualification in accountancy. The training has helped me to understand financial accounts better so when looking through them at work for certain information, this has been made easier/more familiar to me.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have attended a few social events, and there are quite a few social events and networks that I have heard about in EY. The networks sound interesting, however I have not attended any, as I do other activities outside of work, and don't really have the time to join anything extra.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because everyone is very friendly, the pay is good and you come out with a great qualification at the end of it all, as well as many years of experience in a working industry. You are very employable, and EY is a well known and good firm to work for.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Be yourself, try your best and make sure you know the job description and everything about the job you are applying for. There are a lot of resources on the EY website to help you understand your job better and help you do the best you can when applying, so make the most of it!
