  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The primary role of a fibre engineer, is to provide and install fibre circuits to businesses, within a designated area of work. The role also includes providing maintenance and building fibre infrastructure.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt several new skills in terms of health and safety, sign guarding and road safety when working in public and non public areas. I have also learnt new technical skills in using and utilising fibre to build curcuits, also patching of customer hardware to fibre curcuits, the coding of the fibre routing and infrastructure recording and labelling.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme was most enjoyable as it was an opportunity to meet new people, from different parts of the organisation. It also meant we were able to have a wider understanding of our different roles, but also to share experiences, as the programme brought to light the multitude of tasks we carried out on a day to day basis.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was structured so well as it added to my fundamental understanding of my role, and the activities that i would be using and developing in becoming and effective fibre engineer. At each stage of the programme task completed meant you had an opportunity to reflect on what was carried out, and how this was to support our development as engineers.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Total support was given to me by my employers, from managers completing and issuing documentation in support of assignments, to my field manager assistant providing guidance with coursework.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Total support and encouragement was given to my by all providers. All assignment feedback and instant and concise and communication relating to course work was clear and understandable.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Receiving confirmation of my qualification result was great, as it meant that I had developed to a proficient level in a completely new industry. It also meant that I could continue in my development in the field knowing where and when to gather the resources to the next level.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At this moment in time due to family commitments, I am unable to participate in extra- curricular activates however when my peers arrange events I make an effort to attend.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend joining openreach, because opportunities open to all who want progress. Most job roles that I have seen within the organisation require you to grow and progress in your abilities, which you can share with others, in and outside the organising


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I would advise others applying to openreach would be to have a plan for what you wanted and where you want to be in the coming years. A short term plan and a long term plan, and to take every opportunity to take opportunities that arise within the organisation.
