  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work within the service team on a project with an NHS Trust. My role involves managing small projects such as software deployments and server decommissioning. The role requires me to raise change requests and coordinate different technical parties in completing their portion of the work. I also assist in dealing with escalated incidents and work requests. I am required to work closely with the client to manage these issues

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The role has allowed me to develop my communication skills and broaden my technical knowledge. The team I work within are very supportive and I have learnt a lot from working with them. The degree course also provides lots of learning and I am able to apply a lot of stuff into my work

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme and have benefited greatly from being a part of it. I've been working on the same project since I joined CGI and they're a great bunch which makes my work enjoyable. CGI is also a great company with lots of opportunities for development.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The student recruitment team do a good job of organising the induction and initial introduction on to the programme. They are also very supportive along the way. The University however have been poor at times with their management of the programme. There has at times seemed to be a lack of leadership of our course on their side which has had a negative impact on the students as we've been left in the dark. We have also been let down by some poor lecturers.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • CGI provide plenty of support. For example I have a work based mentor who I speak to most weeks. He offers me advice and support in relation to both work and university. This helps me to review my progress and approach university in the right way. They also provide study leave in third year which is very helpful with all the assignments and dissertation I have to write up.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The university provide support in the form of module lecturers. These can be hit and miss in terms of how much support they provide and also how good they are at teaching the content. In my third year I have a dissertation supervisor who supports me with writing my dissertation, this has been helpful so far and will hopefully help me get over the line in terms of my dissertation.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Some of the learning from university has applied well in to work and I have been able to use what I have learnt in university on the job. However this isn't always the case and we have at times been given modules that have absolutely no value in our work (e.g. business management students doing software development). In these instances it can make the modules quite challenging.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • CGI offers an extensive variety of extra social activities. I have been involved in the CGI Euros, an annual football tournament that is contested between offices from all over Europe, for two years. This has been an enjoyable experience and helped expand my network. I have also been involved in 5 a side and plenty of after work drinking

  • 9a. Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • CGI are a good employer and offer roles in a variety of industries. There are plenty of opportunities to develop and work in different areas. The people are great and make work enjoyable. The degree apprenticeship is a brilliant chance to learn an get experience working in a major company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • On the assessment day, be yourself and take the opportunity to ask lots of questions. This is as much about you assessing CGI as it is them assessing you. Having some work experience and showing you have a passion for IT will help you. Make sure you speak to other candidates during the downtime and show you're a friendly, personable candidate.
