  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • A brilliant role. Lots of learning and development on regular basis. Everyday is a new and a different day. Great role and great career. Trainee Engineer is responsible for any of the Telecom tasks between the exchange and the customer property. It can be a new telephone / internet provide, connecting to the fibre, working only in the exchange etc. Main objective is to provide the service to the customer.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Within last twelve months, I learnt a lot with openreach. Installation, working on faults, fibre provision, broadband faults and the UG skills, all these skills are gained during this duration. Best bit is the training and then buddying. What you learn in the classroom, you implement in the supervision of the buddy / experienced engineer, this makes the learning more fruitful.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • This is the real example of a great programme, where you learn in the class, implement in the supervision of the experienced engineer and then you work on your own. I have no words to explain, how much I enjoy the programme. This programme is an excellent platform for the engineers to learn and develop their career.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • This programme is quite well structured, although there is room for the improvement. The trainings, study material, buddying and then work experience is brilliant. At the start of the programme, it seems slight lack of organisation, where I believe it has room to improve. First week at Yarnfield is one of the important week for the Trainee Engineers, that week should be better organised from the team. Other than that, no complaint.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • 100% Support at each step. Never seen an organisation, where you get this much support. From the training, buddying and then working on your own, support is available for the engineer. There are buddy, coach, coach on demand, other engineers, assist option, manager and all team members, everyone support you at each step.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Fair support we receive from the training provider. I will say, more NVQ days should be given to the engineers, as during the working days, it is nearly impossible to work on the assignments / modules during to work task and then family life. Other than that, everyone seems to be supportive.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Definitely qualification has great impact on our performance. Whether it is health and safety regulations, Code of Conduct or any other procedures, we cover them in the qualification in depth. Also there are modules, those require writing and proving each and every bit of our job. It is good. Although, some of the items seem repetitive.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there are extra-curricular activities at work, but there should be more activities. I have attended two events arranged from BT, excellent learning, networking and knowing inside of the BT / Openreach. I will say, sports should be added on the seasonal basis. Football, Hockey and Cricket Tournaments should be done between different regional teams.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I recommend this opportunity to my friends on regular basis. Some of the reasons are. 1. Excellent Career Opportunity. 2. Great Learning and Development. 3. Career Progression. 4. Work / Family life balance. 5. Support at each level. 6. Fairness. 7. Great Organisation. 8. Different rota options. 9. Fair Pay Package.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • If you are a hard worker and are willing to learn, this is a great place to work for. There might be some tough aspects of the job for some, but there are more positives. Still, it is good to assess your strengths and weaknesses before applying. Bad weather, climbing the poles etc. are few issues, some people find it tough. If you decide to join, then be positive and give your 100%. There is 100% support available to coach you to make you a better engineer. This job needs positive attitude, if you have one that, then you will love the job.
