  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job is to prepare accounts for businesses and companies. Generally, this involves using data, reconciling transactions, using accounting technical training, to create a set of accounts for our clients. I also get involved in tax work, eg personal tax returns. There are other miscellanious jobs that I may be asked to do that relate to client's other advisory work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I feel that there is a large focus in my apprenticeship on soft skills and other aspects of working in an office and receiving a qualification, other than exam results. I feel I have achieved a deeper understanding of my role and how I can become more part of the team, through enhanced communication skills. I feel I have learnt to also be commerically aware through various skills days.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy what I am stuyding and the apprenticeship days and work that I have to undertake. There are of course harder aspects, with lots of studying, and it can sometimes be a struggle to maintain my professional qualification training file and apprenticeship portfolio alongside working fulltime and studying. I feel like it has given me the opportunity to understand how important time management is, more so than ever in my previous academic history.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel like the apprenticeship people and support workers are amazing at keeping my programme structured and regulary reviewed. There is a definite structure, which I have been able to keep to, by passing all the exams I have taken to date. An apprenticeship timeline is provided to us, and reviewed to ensure I am on the right track and all information on it is correct. It gives me a good overview, to show me how I am progressing through the programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have a line manager, who I regulary meet with to discuss my training. I can also speak to her anytime, should I have any queries. I do also have other colleagues who are part of training within the company. They are very supportive and keen to find out how I am feeling within the programme. They offer support everytime I go on study, with regular phone calls after each mock exam and real exam. I know that should I have any queries or issues, I am able to speak to them openly about it, and feel they would help me through it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is amazing. All the staff and lectures are so helpful and I really believe they want everyone to succeed. They are thorough and clear in their teaching and tasks they want you to complete for the study courses. They are available via phone and email, to ask them any questions, should you get stuck. The staff also stay later after class times, to be available for anyone who needs help. I have been in this situation and grateful that this occurs at this training provider.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that there has been so much invaluable knowledge and study that I use daily in my job. I am able to apply what I have learnt, to a real life situation and interpret it in such a way, to personalise my study to the event. I feel there is so much benefit from the study, even if you dont remember every single thing you have learnt. It gives the inclination to question something you may not have before.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I do get involved in the staff forum, which occurs quarterley, where offices representatives meet to discuss firm wide issues. I also get involved in the hockey team whenever I am available and have played a few games. I am keen to attend networking events as I have now asked my partner in the firm, whether I can attend. I also am a firm reresentative for SWECASS, a student society, and encourage trainees within the firm to get involved in social events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Albert Goodman to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel like Albert Goodman offers a clear and organised way to gain a qualification, as well as receive training in such a variety of different departments, eg tax/ audit, as well as different offices. There are also many things alongside study, that Albert Goodman offers, eg opportunity to get involved in extra curricular activities.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Albert Goodman?
  • I would advise someone to ensure they have the ability, drive and motivation to succeed. Most accountancy firms are fast pace, which involves lots of study alongside a full time job. Albert Goodman does give students and trainees time off to study at the training provider but I would advise someone to ensure they are happy to continue studying in their own time.
